Recent videos (MPG) made on my Sony Cybershot P7 camera don't play right on my computer. For example, a three might video might play only the first two seconds, then freeze. This occurs in WMP 11, Roxio Easy Media Creator 8, Windows Movie Maker and Winamp 5.35. I have a fairly new Dell Precision M4300 with Intel core2duo processor, 2 mb of memory running Win XP Pro SP2.

The videos play fine in the camera. They also play in the VLC Media Player, but from there, I can't figure out how to save them into a format that can be edited in one of my editing programs. They also play correctly in Video Redo, but when I save the file as an MPG, it has the same problem in WMP, etc., as the original file did.

When trying to open the file in Pinnacle Studio Quickstart, I got an error message saying it wasn't configured to open PAL files, but I don't think they're in PAL format.

Also, I took one of the files that doesn't play right in WMP, etc., as noted above, and uploaded it to YouTube, where it plays perfectly fine, in its entirety.

This leads me to conclude there is something goofy on my computer - possibly a missing CODEC - but which one?

I also downloaded ffdshow, but can't figure out how to use it to solve this problem.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Sorry, I previously posted this same issue on another Web site that doesn't seem to be active anymore.]

You can verify if it is your Mpeg codec by installing VLC , which uses it's own built in codec for mpeg playback.

The video plays correctly in VLC, but I'm not sure what that tells me, or what I should try next in order to edit the thing in Movie Maker, Media Creator or Pinnacle.
