  1. I was wondering what codec would give the best picture quality. Or is there a combination of them? I ask because I had installed divx 5.1 and then I would install 4.12 and that would give me good quality, I don't know how. But I have uninstalled both due to a computer problem. I then reinstalled them and now the quality of the divx movies is noticeably less. What is the best codec to use for divx movies? Or should I try xvid codec? Thanks for your help.

  2. Try the latest Xvid codec. It's an MPEG 4 codec just like Divx but it's completely free.

    Quality is subjective.

What may look good to you may look like garbage to someone else.

That said, I use both Divx and Xvid.

The higher the bitrate, the better the quality.

  4. I asked because with divx 5.2 it looks like the final product comes out darker than if I use divx 4.12. Only that the newer divx look clearer. Now, I have never used xivd. Would it be just as easy to edit the movies as it is with divx? Is xvid better than divx? Sorry but I am a newbie to all this. Thanks.

Like I said, it is subjective.

Use what looks best to you.

I am not trying to be rude, but the only way you are really going to find out is to try the codec yourself.

  6. Xvid and Divx quality are pretty much the same. And it's just as easy to use. The only minor issue is that a few of the older hardward Divx players don't like Xvid.

  7. Thanks for the replies and help. I will definitely try them all so that I can judge what looks best. Have a good one.
