  1. I spotted this - how does this work? Surely the moon doesn't belong to anyone in particular, so how can it be sold?

    Here's the link:

    It's just a gimmick, isn't it?

    Hello,

    SPACE ISN'T FOR SALE!!

As far as I know there is no way any entity public or private, can own anything in space.

That was part of the whole space race in the 60's. Otherwise satellites couldn't orbit the earth because it would cross into sublot 888 and would pay fees - that would be insane.

Like I said I believe that space is still free.

Kind of reminds me of the businessman in The Little Prince. He claimed since he counted all the stars put the number of them on a piece of paper, and kept the paper in a safe, he owned all the stars. That is the way we do real estate, right?

That's funny this topic came up. Years ago (highschool-over 10 years.) My friend "Jason" showed me a deed of land he bought from some magazine advertisement. 1 Acre of moon property. I believe he spent 30 CDN bucks. Document had some embossed seal, look very authentic. It's been some time now, don't know if he started bulding his new home LOL -garman

I remember when this first surfaced (to me, anyways) about 2 years ago. It seems that for one reason or another, the moon could be claimed by individuals, much like land back in the 1850's or so here in Australia. From what I can recall, some bloke somewhere claimed the moon and then proceeded to subdivide it.

    http://www.planetaryinvestments.com/

The UN Outer Space Treaty of 1967 stipulated that no government could own extraterrestrial property. However, it neglected to mention individuals and corporations. Therefore, under laws dating back from early US settlers, it was possible to stake a claim for land, and register it with the US Government Office of claim registries.

A declaration of ownership was filed with the United Nations as well as the US and Russian governments in 1980 by Mr. Dennis M. Hope of the Lunar Embassy, to ensure that a legal basis for the ownership of the properties sold here can be claimed.
I believe this is not considered to be legally binding, and all the information I could find pointed towards this being a hoax, and that any deeds to land were null and void.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Knowing my luck if I bought an arce on the moon 80 years from now it would be in the Baltic Avenue of locations. (ie: not even worth the $20.00 paid for it)

It would be fraud if he sold an acre to you, then sold the same acre to someone else. However, if he transfers ownership of one of his Moon acres to you for a price you both agreed upon, and he does in fact, surrender ownership to you as agreed, you have no legal basis for fraud. You got what you paid for. How you go about developing your land is not his concern.

I guess the question is, does he own it to start with ? Selling something you don't own is fraud.
    If in doubt, Google it.

It's fraud to sell something you don't own, and misrepresentation to say you do own it if you really don't.

If the U.S. Homstead Act is indeed valid, he does in fact, own the Moon. He was the first and only one to stake a claim, right?

P.S. Does that mean the cow in Hey, Diddle, Diddle was a claim jumper?

Sorry. It was a long day.

The US Homestead Act only applies when the moon is over the US. When it's on the other side, the moon belongs to someone in Asia.

But as far as we know, no one in Asia staked a claim. If he staked a claim before the Asian did, his was the "firstest with mostest".

JohnnyC, you may want to read a little back in this thread under DVDRipper. I still think that idea came from de St. Exupery's businessman in The Little Prince (ibid.).
