I spotted this - how does this work? Surely the moon doesn't belong to anyone in particular, so how can it be sold?

It's just a gimmick, isn't it?![]()

Hello,
SPACE ISN'T FOR SALE!!
As far as I know there is no way any entity public or private, can own anything in space.
That was part of the whole space race in the 60's. Otherwise satellites couldn't orbit the earth because it would cross into sublot 888 and would pay fees - that would be insane.
Like I said I believe that space is still free.

That's funny this topic came up. Years ago (highschool-over 10 years.) My friend "Jason" showed me a deed of land he bought from some magazine advertisement. 1 Acre of moon property. I believe he spent 30 CDN bucks. Document had some embossed seal, look very authentic. It's been some time now, don't know if he started bulding his new home LOL -garman

I remember when this first surfaced (to me, anyways) about 2 years ago. It seems that for one reason or another, the moon could be claimed by individuals, much like land back in the 1850's or so here in Australia. From what I can recall, some bloke somewhere claimed the moon and then proceeded to subdivide it.

The UN Outer Space Treaty of 1967 stipulated that no government could own extraterrestrial property. However, it neglected to mention individuals and corporations. Therefore, under laws dating back from early US settlers, it was possible to stake a claim for land, and register it with the US Government Office of claim registries.
A declaration of ownership was filed with the United Nations as well as the US and Russian governments in 1980 by Mr. Dennis M. Hope of the Lunar Embassy, to ensure that a legal basis for the ownership of the properties sold here can be claimed. If in doubt, Google it. -
I've seen and read about this myself, I just recently saw him while surfing the TV on a talk show. The guy is still selling them and hasn't been prosecuted for fraud???? I wonder why?

Knowing my luck if I bought an arce on the moon 80 years from now it would be in the Baltic Avenue of locations. (ie: not even worth the $20.00 paid for it)
-
Only 19.95...quite a steal if you ask me.
-
Don't you need special permission to have a satelite in space...which I pressume would cost money to get?? WHICH means that anything up there could be for sale...?? I don't know...

This reminds me of that novelty thing where you can have a star named after you. All you're really getting is a piece of paper.....
