Ok, I think the source of my problem might have stemmed from installing PowerDVD but I'm not 100% sure. Any file I open in VLC (divx, xvid, mpeg) is just a blackscreen with sound, it detects the resolution of the video file and plays sound fine... but thats it. Some files I can open in WMP and play them fine (seems like all divx do, but only some mpegs) but cmon WMP sucks. I uninstalled PowerDVD and reinstalled some codecs but to no avail. Any idea's what I can do here?

VLC uses it own codecs so it should't matter what codecs you install. Did VLC work before you installed PowerDVD? Are you using latest VLC?

You can try change the video output settings under Settings->Preferences->Video->Output modules and click advanced options and try different video out modules.

Thanks, I tried adjusting the settings like you said and it worked great, I missed the advanced options checkbox when I was trying to try different settings. Thanks for the help, works fine now.
