playback goes slow and becomes out of sync with audio. ive tried tons of video players and i cant seem to fix it. i dont see how my system couldnt be fast enough to play these, especially since a lot of them work.

1080p ts with mpeg4? Then might your system be too slow. I would try haali media splitter together with latest ffdshow or coreavc and play with Media Player Classic.

Open up the task manager and check under Performance, does the cpu usage hit 100% when you play the ts?

some ts files under windows media player classic dont play the video, just the sound. i have to open it with either zoom player or regular windows media player. the ones i can open with windows media player classic i never have a problem with. uninstalled all codecs and will try the combo of haali + ffdshow.

yeah just tried that combo and when i open it with wmp classic, it just shrinks down to a screenless box and only the audio plays.

also forgot to mention that when i tried to run it under wmp or zoom player, cpu usage was usually at about 45 to 50%. could a core 2 duo at 2.4 ghz and 2 8800 gtx rly not be enough(i know sli probly doesnt help for movies, but 1 8800 should help right?), wouldnt my cpu utilization be maxed out if that was the case?

edit - with haali + ffdshow its now playign smoothly under regular windows media player, but whenever i try to skip forward or back in the movie it closes with an error

edit 2 - reinstalled zoom player and now it skips forward sometimes, but still crashes most of the time i try. ok i can skip forward 1 time if i do it right when the movie opens, but any time i try it after that it crashes in zoom too.

Many users are having issues playing 1080p files (mp4/mkv). It all comes down to cpu power and codecs. You can help eliminate issues by ensuring you have the latest MB and video drivers. Many users seem to report better luck using CoreAVC over ffdshow.

I haven't heard anyone say it doesn't work, but I guess what you are getting at is whether or not it will actually solve your problem.

This is one of the pitfalls of trying to use new technology.

You may just want to ensure you have the latest version of ffdshow.

You might also try using VLC to play them back as it can often work when other programs fail or give bad results. If your files are American TV captures with MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio, I agree that your PC should be fine for playing these back. If these are really files that were encoded with MPEG-4 video, that could be the problem as MPEG-4 playback at 1080 is tough on a lot of PCs. You might look at the files with Gspot and see if you can determine if they are really MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 encodes.

Same here, I've tried a few 1080i(p) films and all playback is slow to varying degrees. iI recently upped my ram to 2.0GB which has helped a little but audio and video is out of sync. I have a Dell XPS with res of 1980x1200 with Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX v.card, I've tried goodness knows how many combinations of codecs and still can't get it right.

    Any suggestions?

Playback issues are mostly cpu and codec related. CPU specs seem to indicate 2.5ghz or higher dual core (3 ghz+ single core). You also need to have the latest ffdshow or coreavc (which seems to work better for some).

If playback of 720p files or lowering the output res of 1080 files solves your playback issues, then you are likely having hardware issues.

The newest v1.6 of CoreAVC Pro takes advantage of multicore procs. For $15, it's worth the dough.

Inability to scrub through a file while it is playing is usually due to an indexing problem in the file itself, or the media splitter in the playback software is faulty. CPU performance is also a factor.

    That's great thanks alot.

updated 1.1.08: No thought I'd got it sorted still the same issues with some of the other files. I have a 1080p film under 5GB that works fine but the others over 5GB are still choppy and unstable. My CPU is maxed out at 100% when I'm playing these.
