  1. Hello people,

My sister gave me some anime DVD, but most of the file are in OGM file. Now I want to convert OGM into the standard format, which format should I go for: Avi or Mpeg ?

Btw....do you guy know which program is good to convert the OGM file into Avi or Mpeg?

Thanks, I can't seem to find them on the Tools section.

  2. Okay I find a way to convert OGM to AVi. The tool is VirtualDub.

Do I have to install Xvid in order for the conversion to proceed?

  3. i just run the ogm straight into tmpgenc to convert to mpeg2. i have to click all files in the drop down box for browse. if you want to convert to avi then virtualdub mod is best but why convert them if you arent gonna author them eventually? if you have th ecorrect prgrams then the ogm should contain or may contain a subtitle file or multiple audio streams. see if it has these attributes.

ps explain the reasons for why you want to convert.

ogm IS avi (to all intents).

If using Vdub (VirtualDubMod is the one you want) then YES you will need the xvid codec.

  5. Oh I just want to convert OGM to the "standard" AVI extension. Well, I'm not authoring it or anything. All I want is that in the future, who know what might happen to OGM format.

So do you guy recommend me to convert it or not? Which program is better, Virtualdubmod or Tmpgenc? If no, which codec is required in order to watch OGM file?

ps: I really like xvid codec, if install it, will WMP let me watch OGM file?

    thanks a million!

  6. Hey guys, I just do some search on the forum, and I found out you can change the Ogm extension to AVI. Then that file would be able to play. Is it true?

update: nvm..tried it but no success.

    ogm != avi
ogm is basically a hack of the ogg container to allow non Xiph streams. Also not all ogm's use XviD.

To playback an ogm file you need several things.
    1) An ogm splitter/parser
    2) A decoder for whatever video it uses. Say XviD.
    3) A decoder for whatever audio it uses. Most likely vorbis.
    4) Possibly a subtitle filter like directvobsub if it contains subtitles.
    5) A player/splitter/filter that can handle multiple audio streams if it uses them.

Media Player Classic is good as it has built a built in audio switcher, subtitle support and an ogm splitter. Only things it lacks are a vorbis decoder and XviD decoder. You could use ffdshow for both or install corevorbis and XviD.

mplayer and VLC support the ogm container, vorbis audio, XviD, etc. then there are Tobias' original ogg filters that have a built in vorbis decoder.

  8. So do you recommend me to just leave the file alone as OGM, or convert to AVI for future proof?

Btw....When I installed PowerDVD6, it got dixv already. All I do is download and install OggDS 0.9.9.5, then my OGM file can play using WMP. (I already have VobSub). So why do you install too many stuff?

ps: Should I uninstall Divx from Powerdvd6, and install xvid instead? If I have them both, will it overrun each other?

Depends if DivX is setup to handle XviD's fourCC or not.
By the way I don't think dvobsub works with OggDS 0.9.9.5, you would need to use Tobias' matching subtitle filter.

As for future proof. ogm hasn't been developed in years. Guess you could say a similar thing about avi though, however avi is much more common, it also can't handle vorbis audio so you would need to re-encode that.

  10. Not really, the subtitle works great for me. Anyway, so should I convert to AVI, or just leave the OGM file alone? I don't know if years from now (10-20 years), who know what might happen to OGM. AVI is more common, by that time, people can still develope AVI stuff...but not OGM.

Please give me some advice, thanks.
