  1. hey all,

For some reason, whenever I try to open an MPEG using either Windows Media Player or Winamp, the video plays for about 20 seconds, freezes, and then i get a message saying that my internet is no longer connected. i have windows2000 server edition, and i have an ati dfe 530tx+ video card. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thank you,

    gurnett

why are you using server edition ?

it is not good for multimedia use - unless you twidle with a lot of settings -- it is also slower to use than pro workstation versions ..

    it is also expensive ..

I recall a similar instability when I was running 2000. If you're running Winamp, make sure it's version 5. Apply the appropriate service packs.

Move the LAN card to another PCI slot. Also, certain motherboards have a crashing problem when the sound card on the motherboard is used.

Does your completely freeze when the network connection drops?

it is not more stable -- it is the same code base as workstation -- in fact you can turn into another ..

if anything it is MORE unstable because if you don't know about the extra services it is running - lets just say you can be very surprised -- many anti virus and home firewalls don't work or work proper on server version ..

it is a expensive program -- i am curious how you got it for free ...

as i stated - it is poor for any multimedia use - unless you go in and rape and pillage it and basically turn it back to workstation ...

we have had to use adv server on quad xeon cpu workstations -- and it takes a lot of set up to make them useful ..
