As I'm pretty much a newbie, maybe I should put this one off until more experience.

I have a VHS letterbox movie with subtitles. Do I treat it as a 4:3 and have the existing subtitles as part of the picture or do I treat it as a 16:9 and add the subtitles back in? I want to do this well.

I have read thru lots of stuff on this site and I find how to add subtitles, but not what to do if you already have them unless I am interpreting it wrong.

I'm not looking for how to, but on which to do. That's why I haven't included details of what I am using to do what.

    Thank you

  2. well i take it ur capturing from vhs to pc for conversion to a a digital format, i've only ever done 1 vhs movie with sub's but the thing i found out after i had capped it and cropped out the subs ( because they were unreadable after capping) was that i had great difficulty syncing the subs into the movie because of adverts id chopped out and the movie not being the same length and frame rate in relation to the sub title file i downloaded, the end result was pretty bad and in hind site i should have concentrated more on doing a better quality cap in the 1st place lol, thats just my experience with it

I guess it makes sense to try it and see if the subs are readable than. There are no adverts to cut or anything else to cut out for that matter so that eliminates that problem.

I should put what I am doing:
I am capturing from SVHS VCR to PC with a ADS Pyro A/V Link. I am not sure which software. I am trying NeroVision which works well. Also Studio8 or Ulead (what ever came with the ADS) both work fine. I am just having a time finding what works with what other software. So far anything that opens with DVD2SVCD will not open with TMPGEnc so I have had to convert with Canopus converter. I've been trying short tests of all formats thru all the different software.

    Thank you
