I want to convert my cd collection up to the DVD Audio specification. By DVD Audio I mean the new format coming out and not just a DVD with PCM or AC3 stereo on it.

Whats the best program and best way to do this?

  2. There are LPCM specs and MLP specs. Discwelder Bronze by www.minnetonkaaudio.com handles some flavors of LPCM for about 99 bones US.

For MLP you have to drop quite a bit of cash on higher end Discwelder versions that handle MLP as well as an MLP encoder.

    Very expensive at this point.

I am seeing that Wavelab 5 seems to have a DVD audio function.

Anyone with experience in this program. Not cheap, but cheaper than most.

I can't see any point in attempting to do so.

CD Audio is sampled at 44100Hz and 16 bits. Resampling this to, say, 192kHz and 32 bits will only interpolate bits and create non-existent information out of the existing.

The sound quality won't improve. Just the size will grow bigger.

Imagine converting a low quality 320x240 video into uncompressed AVI with a resolution of 720x480 (DVD). It won't improve the quality a bit.

I have compared a couple of DVD Audio and SACD disks with the same albums issued as CDs. I guess the recording and mastering equipment weren't up to specs for High definition audio, so I couldn't hear any difference between the two.

The main improvement DVD Audio can offer is extended dynamic range. If you start with CD audio, this is gone anyhow. You could perhaps re-create it by using dynamic range filters, but the result isn't good enough to justify the effort.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
