Microsoft Sets 2006 Target for Next Windows Version

Microsoft Corp. said on Friday it will ship the next version of Windows in 2006, but scaled back plans to include a new system for finding and storing information in its flagship operating system.

If it follows the .NET system they are proposing, there is a good chance it will fail. People will just stick with XP because they don't trust Windows servers to be up for critical applications. And rightly so. There was one Windows NT 4.0 server I had to restart on a daily basis because it couldn't cope with requests from the entirety of more than one training room at once.

If they'd just design an OS where users, system-level code, and application-level code were adequately protected from one another, I wouldn't be so down on them.

Not that 2006 is right around the corner, but how much more time is it really going to take to get things RIGHT? The majority of Window$ users haven't even upgraded to XP yet; and I think it's safe to say that those who have, are more concerned with making what they have secure and compatible. Who's really beating on M$ door demanding an all new OS as soon as they can scrap together some code and put it on a (DVD?).

wooow... THE ONLY reason I would upgrade from XP is because the the new file system... searching through many gigs of files sucks. And the indexing service in XP got so bloated I turned it off.

Unless Microsoft are going to redesign Windows from the ground up, this new file system will not do a thing to convince me to upgrade. I've seen the URLs that clicking on can delete vital OS files, and if such a lack of security is perpetuated, then one has to wonder what the point is. The issues I keep having with Windows are enough to make me want to consider a Mac.

Not really new, Longhorn's been planned for a while, though no official date was given.

I heard somewhere Longhorn was to be out in 2005, seems like microsoft keep pushing the date further, now 2006. the question be, is it really worth upgrading, what can longhorn do that xp cant, not to mention all the bugs when it is officially released.

im happy with xp and aint looking forward to longhorn.

I have Winme on one of my PC's and use it for gaming and multimedia,I have no plans to upgrade.
As for Longhorn why doesn't MS wait until WinFS is stable?...or is that an oxymoron? :P

As I understand it, Longhorn is supposed to be completely new. I think they want to get it out because it will bring in more revenue.....

Maybe you wanna check out Mac OS X... if Microsoft stays so far behind the competition as they do now, sooner or later users will start to notice it, especially as more and more of them are very frustrated because of all the Windows security issues.

That's because they need more time to find ways of putting more and more functionality from Linux and MAC OS into their new system. They'l get the look and the feel eventually, but they will "value add" in some of the famous Microsoft bugs we all know and love.

If so, then that is a HUGE reason for people to upgrade. I know I will be first in line. Those of us with 64 bit chips will get all kinds of performance increases as new 64 bit software comes out.

Microsoft has a bunch of license agreements that expire next year so expect to see at least an ultra bare bones Longhorn on the shelves. If not then Microsoft has to repay the license owners for not having to market in time.

WinXP weighs in at ~1.5GB full install. So how big is Longhorn going to be? Gee, I still know of loads of users who are still running Win98! And ME, about the only thing I liked about it was the VDM. Great for playing old DOS games w/o fiddling w/ base, extended & expanded memory settings like you had to in 98's DOS mode.

There is definitely no available 64 bit version of XP. MS is offering a free beta of some 64 bit os. I thought it was a longhorn beta, but I don't know. In any case, when a true 64 bit os comes out that should provide some pretty huge benefits to people with 64 bit chips. I always thought that Longhorn was supposed to be that os. I get my cable modem set up next week. I'll download the beta and post back what kind of performance boosts I get with my 64 bit Opteron.

There's 64-bit XP but it's not something you can just go out and buy. You can get it from an OEM if you buy an Itanium system. 64-bit for Athlon64 is still unreleased. My guess is pesudo 64-bit would be 32-bit OS with 64-bit extensions.

Similar to how Win95 was a "32-bit" OS, but a goodly chunk of it was really 16-bit for compatibility with legacy apps.

Hell Digital systems have been running 64 bit VMS for years.

Then they were stupid and sold out to Compaq which destroyed their reputation and service.
