I am tempted to buy the NEC 2500A drive now at newegg. I heard 2500A can be flashed to make it a dual-layer dvdrw so I am going with 2500a rather than a NEC2510 dvdrw.
1) But should I wait since dvdrw drives are getting cheaper real quick as fast drives are introduced to the market?
2) Should I pay like $5 bucks more and get the Roxio CD/DVD Creator 6 cd that is bundled together with the OEM dvdrw? I have Nero Burning Rom 5.5 and not too sure if it is enough.
3) Or can I find the software I need at doom9.org?

roxio software sucks big time in my opinion. i'd keep the nero burn you have and use that first. if the version you have doesn't seem to work well with the nec drive you're getting, then just upgrade your nero to the latest version. i believe a new version is out 6.3.1.20.
as for dvd burners whether you wait till they become cheaper won't make much of a difference. computer components change like what every 4-5 months or sooner than that. buy what you can afford and read up on different brands of drives. dual layer media, 8x & 12x speed discs are scarce at the moment but i believe their are some manufacturers that will be releasing them sometime this fall. also dual layer can only be burned at 2.4x speed. in my opinion i would hold off on getting a dual layer burner because not all standalone dvd players will be able to playback dual layer discs correctly or even play them at all. remember that every drive has their pros and cons. there is no one drive that is better than another. they all have their strengths and weaknesses.
you can also use IMG TOOL BURN to burn dvd's as long as you have NERO BURN installed on your pc. it's a freeware program, here's the link for the download:

good luck on purchasing your drive! newegg rocks!
