Avi-Mpg sound sucks using tmpgenc

I've recently aquired some movies that were cammed and the sound sucks to begin with but is bearable on the computer when they are played in their avi format, however when i convert with tmpgenc the sound comes out very tinny and almost sounds mechanized. Now I was just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of experience and what they did. I was thinking about using virtualdub and ripping the audio to a wav format the only problem is that I have limited hard drive space (~1Gb)so I would probably then convert it to a high bitrate mp3 but it would depend on how it sounds. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks I forgot I had the toolame encoder like the post that you linked to suggests, I'll give that a try. As far as the posting in the conversion section thing I guess I'm just so used to asking in this one that I forgot, normally I'm the one pointing things like that out.

Ok I used toolame and ran my computer temporarily down to 100megs free and I had to stop the encoding cause I wasn't going to have enough room for the 100mb sound file and the encoded movie and the avi file but I can manage something if I burn to some rw's. Anyway the audio seemed the same, very tinny. I think I'm going to try the virtualdub thing I was thinking of before.

Well, why don't you use the normalize effect, in TMPGEnc's Audio Effects option? Use that with Toolame.
if i was running out patience, i'd use sound forgexp or 5.0

It has nothing to do with normalization, what that does is it looks for the highest peak in the audio and then raises everything to that volume or a percentage of it. Anyway I used virtualdub to extract the avi audio and it sounded good so I tried to use the .avi file for video and then the wave again for audio and it still sounded thin, almost like an mp3 with a crappy bitrate like 96 or lower. Anyway I'll wait for a bit and try a few more things, i've got ulead video studio 4 maybe it'll have something in it. What is this program you mentioned forgexp or 5.0 ? do they encode to mp2? also are there demos or freeware cause I've got a student loan to pay off before I can think of spending any money on any new programs. why don't you put it past 100%?

if you have VideoStudio 4, you can put your file in there and do the same thing. make the sound be past 100%.

Go to http://www.sonicfoundry.com and download Acid Express (freeware) and there you can do tons of stuff to your audio.

I'm not sure what putting it past 100% will do other than just make it louder and possibly even cause it to start clipping. Does this acid express support saving to mp2? Because I do have very good audio editing software bur it only supports wav and mp3.
