Hi. TMPGEnc is not working for me. It's giving me a Buffer overrun error when I load a certain avi file into it. It works fine with other avi's just not this one. I tried TMPGEnc Plus but I'm not having good results with it(the quality). So what else is there that converts avi to mpg without changing the aspect ratio and not reducing the quality too horribly? Thanks.

I would start by looking at the offending avi file to see if there is something you can change to make it work. It could be something simple like changing the audio format before you feed it to tmpgenc. G-Spot can tell you what you have. If it is VBR MP3 audio then it might be worth replacing this with an uncompressed version instead, then encoding.

ConvertXtoDVD is a pretty good choice for this type of work, but it's not free.

DVD Flick seems to have it's fans for a free solution.

I tried gspot and I have VBR MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio. I have convertxtodvd. Can this program convert to mpg too? I tried using DVD Flick with a tutorial on this site but I couldn't get it working the way I needed it to get working.

My goal is just to convert this avi to mpg format(without changing the aspect ratio and the quality not getting messed up too much).

What is the ultimate goal ? i.e. does the mpeg have to be DVD Compliant ?

If it does, then you can use VOB2MPG to extract the mpg file from ConvertXtoDVD's output.

Simpler is to change the VBR MP3 audio to uncompressed PCM, then try tmpgenc again. This post : https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=309224 tells you how to do it. It is in the context of audio sync issues, but VBR MP3 audio can do odd things to some encoders anyway.

The ultimate goal is for the mpg to be able to load into TMPGEnc Xpress so I can author a DVD in that program.

I tried installing .net framework 2 but I'm having trouble figuring out which download I need. x86, x64, or IA64? I have windows xp professional edition but not sure what kind of bit processor I have.

Right-click on My Computer and select properties. If you are running the 64 bit version of XP it will tell you here. However, if you don't know, chances are you aren't, so the x86 version is all you need.

Why do you need an mpg to load in tmpgenc express ? Doesn't it take avi files and convert them ?

Yes it does. I'm trying to author a dvd of a complete season of the sopranos and each episode is in avi format. They all work to load into the program except a certain episode(number 3). It Gives me a buffer overrun error. So I figure the only way to get around this is to use a different program that will convert that episode into mpg so I can load it into TMPGEnc.

  8. check out the other recent TMPGEnc 2.5 discussion on this newbie conversion forum. The solution was in the option/envirotmetal/ plugin settings: The problem was in the Direct Show settings in TMPGenc. I move the priorty setting to 1 and everything works .....

    Hope it works.

sorry I didn't check that thread I thought it was only a vista problem. So you were having a buffer overrun error too? Where do you go... I can't seem to find the environmental option in the options or the direct show.

It's giving me this error for another episode too... grr.
