Just curious what other people are doing. I'll generally put 4 movies (length varies of course, but a good approximation is 90 minutes each) on a DVD using the DivX Pro 5.2 codec using the program AutoGk. I'm happy with the results, but do acknowledge that I'm easily satisfied
For longer movies, or for ones that I really care about (pr paid a lot of $ for like imports), I'll put 2 movies per DVD.
It's not just for archival purposes; I have the Phillips DVP642 and can play my backups off of this. As an example, I've bought the LOTR trilogy widescreen (I couldn't wait until the fall when the extended trilogy comes out), and would rip and convert the movies to ~2 gb each. The results look good (to me).
Is anyone else backing up exclusively (or almost so) to DivX/Xvid?
thanks
Tom

Yes, er well no.
I don't "Back Up" per sey. I mean, I am not really worried about the originals going feet up. If they do I would probably go buy a new copy anyway. I know people say stuff like "What if you lost all of your DVDs" well the only way that would likely happen is if my house burnt to the ground and believe me, my DVDs would be the last thing on my mind.
I do copy the movies onto my HTPC in Xvid though. I keep them on the HD which allows me to call them up without having to load any disks. That way I can watch movies while at the computer and I can watch them on the living room TV. If I want to really sit down and watch the movie I will watch the DVD in the basement.
I normally use a bitrate of 1500kbps for the video and a stereo (PLII) Ogg Vorbis @ Quality 4 for the audio track.
On the 27" analog TV in the living room it looks almost as good as the DVD.
I feel obligated to suggest trying Xvid 1.0.1 over Divx 5.2 as most reports (check the posts over on the Divx forum of Doom9.org) are that 5.2 still can't hold a candle to Xvid and some say that it looks worse than 5.1.1

I usually am dropping family movies on my DVD... so anywhere from 10 to 20 (10 -15 minute) snippets are tossed on any typical DVD.

I put 6 DVDs (22 episodes 42 min each.. total 924mins) onto 1 DVDR
Encoding DivX @ 500 bps dual pass.
The quality is quite acceptable to me watching with TV-out through my PC or on my Digitrex DVD player which has Mpeg4 playback (plays DivX). I am looking at the Philips DVP642. Can you tell me Thomas, your impressions of the DVP642? -
I got the Phillips dvp642 at Wal-Mart last week. As of to date it has played everything I've put in it. I had a couple of cds, that I burnt on my computer, that wouldn't play in my daughter's cd burner in her computer yet the Phillip.s dvp642 played them flawlessly. Overall I am very pleased with the player and the price. I'm using the firmware version that came with it, not sure what version it is. P.S. I am going to get 2 more, one for my son and one for myself.
