If the average file size is 700mb, how many should I burn to a DVD+R? As many as I can fit? Is there any downside to filling the disc up completely?

...if we're not talking about converting to Video DVD (single layer), when I'd say 2 hours tops, which mostly means 1 movie, one disk.

If you don't have a Divx player, then you would have to convert them to DVD MPEG format and two is about all you could put on there with any sort of quality. But if you started with a 700MB Xvid, DVD quality was lost with that conversion.
A 4370MB DVD / 700MB = 6.24 movies. But 5 is probably safer if some go over 700MB. -
Can you watch these on a regular DVD player?

Sorry if the post OP lead you astray.
Yeah, I'm burning 700mb files using Nero's Data DVD option, for use in my home Divx/DVD player. The reason I was asking was because I was told once to only burn 5 movies per DVD, for 'protection'. I'll be burning 6 per disc, from now on. Thanks guys. -
Probably because a lot of DVD disc problems occur on the outer edge of the disc.
For me, that has only been a problem burning DVD Movies to cheap media. I have not experienced this problem burning Data DVDs with the same discs.
Also, a 700MB file is around 718,000 kb. I wouldn't try and fit 6 files that were bigger than that.
If you must, either cut off the very end with direct stream copy in VDub or reencode the audio, whatever is more acceptable to you. With the new version of Virtualdub 1.7.3, you can use Smart Render to cut the beginning and end off of a movie and it is faster than using Direct Stream Copy.
