Besides it player HD content, how good is this thing for tranferring old vhs tapes compared to my jvc hr-s7600u?

I'm assuming I can play the tape and record it to the hard drive and then use the firewire output to transfer to my PC.

Plus this thing has a little better TBC than the 7600u i have now.

Sounds pretty good as I can record the video to the hard drive and then transfer the video to the pc via firewire instead of S-video.

    Does anybody have any recommendations?

    thanks!

I was going to ask the same thing about the HM-DH30000U. How does this compare to a 9000 series jvc vcr (such as the HR-S9800)? All I want to do is capture VHS tapes and put them on DVDs. Which of these vcr's will give me the best picture? Does the DigiPure filter make the 9800 (and similar models) better for this? The 30000 is certainly much more expensive. Does this mean it's better all around, or it just has a lot of stuff I don't need?

I didn't know the 30000 had a hard drive to record to (maybe it doesn't but the 40000 does). If it does, would this be better than running an s-video cable from the vcr to my PC's capture card?

I considered one of these D-VHS decks for video capturing as well. However I decided it was overkill and went for the 9800. Since I also need to capture PAL tapes and convert to NTSC, I"m also looking into the HR-S5980AH PAL/NTSC vcr and a CMD 850 converter. The 5980AH will probably become my main capture VCR. IT doesn't have a TBC like the 9800 but I have a datavideo TBC-1000.

Okay, so I can get a HR-S9600 for $325, or a HM-DH30000 for $375. My only usage for either one is to convert regular VHS tapes to DVD. Which should I get?

Any input would be much appreciated.

I have no experience with D-VHS decks and AFAIK the D-VHS units do not have hard drives, but do have firewire. The firewire is input only I believe for use with a DV cam or a HD tuner with firewire output. Personally I think it would be overkill to use a D-VHS unit for video capture of VHS tapes. The unit is most likey optimized for D-VHS as it's best output with the SVHS and VHS play/record ability being a convience. The VHS and SVHS ability of the unit is most likely not as good as a hi end SVHS deck would be. Having used a 9800 SVHS deck I am very pleased with the results. I'm sure the 9600 is just as good or some might say (lordsmurf) it's better.

Okay, thanks for the input. I'm thinking that I'll work on getting either a 9600 or 9800.

If anyone is interested, there are Factory Refurbished HM-DH30000's for $259 on ecost, here:
    http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash/shop/detail.asp?dpno=285107

I don't think they'll be that cheap much longer, though.

Anyone know of a place to pick up a 96/9800?

thanks for the replies, guys! is there a big difference between the 4000 and 3000 versions? To me, they're pretty much the same.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between a 2mb frame buffer comapred to the 4mb frame buffer for the TBC?

There are two firewire ports....one is input/output and the other, I believe, is input only. The top port I have used to record and play back through to my Sony.

Yaaaaaargh! THERE IS NO FIREWIRE OUT ON THE 30000U. You really should've researched it first! The 40000 has firewire out but it is still around $900.
Your miserable life is not worth the reversal of a Custer decision.
