CloneDVD plain sux (Im talking about version 1.x, I dont do free beta testing for no one, thus haven't tried version 2.x yet), and it sux with movies as 'small' as 5.5GB. With compression of just 90% of original, you still could notice some artifacts in some scenes. Unacceptable.
IMO it was one of the worst 'transcoders' out there so far.
Shrink 3.1.7 does a superb job compared to CloneDVD 1.x -
I dont agree with Derek at all. CloneDvd version2 is very good.
Derek makes it sounds as if your reproduced dvd will be absolutely terrible which of course it wont be.
Assuming that the word 'sux' means glitchy, buggy, slow and down right awful.
All the modern and widely publicised transcoders are worth while.
There is a trial version to try before you buy, so you can make your own up.
Try it and let us know please. Thanks.

Andem, please read again what I wrote.
I have no opinion on CloneDVD 2 yet (Im hoping it will be as good as their CloneCD is), but my opinion on CloneDVD 1.x stands valid. It *is* the worst transcoder out there. The only good thing about it is possibility to remove entirely some useless stuff out of backups (thats what i.e. Shrink still lacks).
BTW - Im not Derekmy nickname is not related to my name at all.

IMHO IV2 Platinum is unacceptable. see other thread today.

Tsoic,
Have you tried CloneDvd2 yet?
Depending on how many times you expect to watch the film, I dont think its worth drawing a line between transcoding programs.
Obviously, i'd stay away from some of the more esoteric brands.
I have tried both CloneDvd 1 and 2, there results looked great before my eyes.
Sorry Derex, got your name wrong - I wasn't being rude.
See ya,

@Vanderlow:
So why talk about an old program that noone is going to buy?
Go download CloneDVD 2 and then state an opinion. -
@ Vanderlow
I did.
Quality indeed is improved (well - much, much better than the version 1 was). However its recompression algorithm (or whatchamacallit) does same "error" as many of the other transcoders. When I compressed a 183min long/7.8GB movie, it shows the sharp-blurry-sharp-blurry effect, which comes from overcompressing of B/P frames while leaving I frames same or very little compressed.
Very same "error" is visible on DVD2One in "constant compression" mode, or first version of DVDShrink had it too.
But when it comes to smaller disc it did excellent job indeed. My first test was a 5.8GB DVD movie, and it was compressed to standard dvd-r size perfectly, and fast too.
I noticed other minor problems and good things about it too, but since this thread is not "a CloneDVD2 review" I just skip it. However I won't skip on the "free/for fee" argument:
I won't recommend CloneDVD2 to anyone because it doesnt make any better job than i.e. free DVDShrink does, therefore I see no point in buying it. -
I also have been working with CloneDVD2 and really like the features and intuitive screens of the program very much. I am quite satisfied with the quality of the audio/video output, except as described below.
However, the transcoding process definitely introduces artifacts into the output video files occasionally, even when increasing compression rates only slightly. And it introduces these artifacts in completely inconsistent ways. Sometimes it is slight tiling for a second or 2. Sometimes portions of the picture don't change scenes as quickly as the rest of the picture. These do not happen throughout the movie, but it seems to introduce at least 1 or 2 brief artifacts like this in every movie. I have rerun the transcoding process on the exact same decrypted source vob's - and gotten new output vob files with previous artifacts not introduced, but new artifacts introduced somewhere else. I cannot imagine why these issues show up sometimes and not others. Why would this program successfully handle a scene properly during one run, and then introduce a problem if I rerun the exact same source files - or vice versa?
These comments apply using the latest CloneDVD2 (2053) trial version. -
Actually, the one thing which CloneDVD2 has going for it that DVD Shrink doesn't, is keeping menus. I tried it out on a Stargate SG-1 backup last night to split the 4 episodes into two discs. Menus for the two episodes which were removed just returned back to the menu, which as is close enough to optimal...
Keep in mind, with splitting there's no transcoding going on so this isn't a comment on the transcoding quality. -
Actually Olli has said more than once that CloneDVD is engineered for lower compression. That it will excel on 5GB movies and not-so-much on a bigger film.
Of course, on an 8GB movie you really should be losing some stuff, or using DVD Rebuilder or splitting the movie or something.

Ever since I tried CloneDVD2 with the "AnyDVD" program, I've never looked back to using my regular method of the Decryptor/Shrink routine. I've basically cut my time process by about 30-40%. Quality is excellent and is probably the easiest and most user friendly program out there. Insert the DVD, Just 4 clicks, let it rip, insert a blank and I'm done. It also erases the files automatically on your computer for you after you're done with the process.

for the price of the ANYDVD/CloneDVD combo ($90 isn't it?) I would want it to put the original DVD back in the box for me
it amazes me people would rather pay $90 when DVDShrink does the ripping part and gives more quality control via removal of menus and ability to distribute variable quality around the DVD
a perfect example of what I mean is that sometimes you don't even have to touch the main movie quality as you can just drop the menus and extras quality and also get rid of any annoying warnings/intros or extra languages in the menu's
as for the time thing, we are talking nanoseconds again
each to his own I suppose -

Using CloneDVD 2 and i'm very happy! Much more simple to use.
DVDShrink doesn't do menus. Period!
CloneDVD 2 doesn't let you specify different compression ratios for different parts of the movie. Period!
The quality is very similar! I can't find differences in a 34 inch TV for the same compression.
I stand by CloneDVD. -
