  1. I included this question in another unanswered post so I decided to list it alone.

When I load any mpeg2 or svcd into Vdub-mpeg2 to check playability after encoding or sync, the audio is choppy when it plays the file. I tried sample mpeg2 videos off the internet and they are all the same.

The svcd's I've loaded just to test it's functionality with mpeg2 files, are burned and play in standalone dvd players.
I use this to get away from re-installing Elecard mpeg2 codec.

I did reinstall Elecard and all mpeg2, svcd's play the audio perfect with Media Player and Real Player

    Anybody have a solution?.

I prefer to use PowerDVD's mpeg2 codecs, which are installed with the software. I think they are generally accepted to be the best. If you don't have it, download a trial version this will also install the codecs.

  3. There's nothing wrong with VirtualDub MPEG2 or your machine. Your simple making an unrealistic demand. Forget about using VirtualDub for checking Audio synch, thats not what it was designed for.

Whenever you playback anything in VDub it is trying to apply all its processing in real time (including what ever filters you have chosen). You'll need quite a fast machine for smooth playback this way.

PowerDVD would work, but Media Player Classic is FREE, and it has a built in MPEG-2 decoder.

  4. Thanks for the reply guys.

Why would it have mpeg2 capability if it can't handle it? Seems that Media Player with Elecard plays the files ok.

I'm really using it after I use Tmpgenc or Power Producer Gold by Cyberlink after capture to make sure audio is sync before I burn.

BTW Producer Gold has caused havoc on my system, registering itself to other programs and software besides Direst Show. I had to use a Direct Show unregister program 2x and reinstall. I'm thinking of scrapping it altogether.

What software are you using for capture? I have a Pinnacle Rave capture card - Prone to a/v sync problems and the only software that captures perfectly is Powervcr II and that's to Mpeg2 in very good quality using the registry hack to remove the preset de-interlace. Read more about it here with Lord Smurf's great guide : >

VirtualDub(s) use Video for Windows codecs, but Windows Media Player is a DirectShow application.

I seriously doubt that you'll find a media player that uses VFW type decoding, its too slow. Any descent Media Player will either use its own routines, or else rely on already installed DirectShow filters.

PowerDVD for instance, uses its own DShow filters; Claud.ax for Audio Decoding, and Clvsd.ax for Video decoding.

VirtualDub MPEG-2 is a modified version of VDub. You'll notice that when you initially load the MPEG-2 file into VDub MPEG-2 that it has to "READ" the file in. Its converting to a format that it can use.

DirectShow decoders work differently. They decode "On-theFly". Whereas VDub MPEG-2 had to read the entire file before it could make use of the individual blocks of data, DShow can decode the individual blocks.

Your pounding in a nail with a screwdriver!
