Is there a way to be notified if you have any new emails, without actually opening outlook Express 6?

  2. Not sure about express but you can set up 'rules' in Outlook that will send a note to your page or cell phone when a new email arrives

I'm looking more for something that will just show an icon in the system tray or a small popup on the screen.

  4. Not familiar with that.... may want to try a few google searches.

In outlook that have a pop-up notification but the program must be open

Mozilla and Netscape will do this if you use them for email. I know some people have to use Outlook for email for work, but I would avoid it at all costs. Seems most of the virii floating around the web are designed to specifically exploit Outlook.

Outlook Express has to be running in order to be notified of new mail since it has to be open to check / retrieve mail. You can set how often it checks, but if it's not up, nothing happens.

Here's a 3rd party shareware app that claims to do it, but I've never heard of it and I don't know anything about it.

Here are a whole section of tools dealing with that.
