Long time ago, after some heavy drinking, I walked into my local PC superstore, and bought these
I am a big gamer fan, so music is important. Unfortunately, my girl isnt a big fan, and a year later, these speakers ended up being hooked up to the TV.
Then there was the "Now I can't listen to Internet radio complaint" because I was using headphones instead. So I went out and bought these, cheaper, but still nice sound.
Anyway, what does everyone else use. Or do you really care. My original speakers were no name 10 dollar shit boxes...that was because I spent my money on graphics card and sound card yadayadayada...anyway, how about everyon else??

I hate to say it, but I rarely turn on my computer speakers. TV (As in surround sound, projection TV) is for sound. I'm not a gamer. I do have a 5.1 surround setup on my computer, along with a subwoofer. No, not important.

I got rid of my desktop speakers altogther once I bought a flat panel monitor. Now I've got my whole desk free. I bought a $6 little box that fits in a 5 1/4 slot. Its got two little speakers and somewhere in there it supposedly has a sub.
I don't play games and if I want to listen to music or watch a movie I do it on my DVD player through my home theatre setup. The only thing I really use my pc's audio for is mixing sound, and since I really only mix in 2.0, I don't need anything special. -
I have some $4 PC speakers I picked up at a computer swap meet...
They're barried somewhere on my desk, I know cause I check to see if they work every once in a while...
Damn I have to clean my desk! -
i'm also a gamer...so speaker/sound is very important to me.
unfortunately the pc i bought came with a cheap speaker. it has a sound
like tin can...im planning to buy altec lansing when i have an extra money.
im so poor can't even buy a decent speaker
since don't have yet the extramoney to buy a new speaker, i hooked up my pc to my cd player/entertainment system so i can play with sound as loud as possible even the neighbors can hear ithacking the Net using typewriter :D -
I run my computers through an Onkyo A/V Receiver that's connected to a pair of Infinity Reference speakers.
-
I bought a set of Boston Acoustic speakers. There's two little tweeter types that sit on my table, and a woofer that sits uder it. The initial sound quality was really good for the price point, but I've noticed that they've lost some fidelity. I build instruments for a living, so sound quality is somewhat important to me. I don't need anything really fancy, but I do like something better than the crappy boxed speakers that come with a new computer.

My PC audio comes out of the laptop speakers usually or through a $10 set of headphones when I want to keep the noise down at night...
My good set of Creative speakers ended up connected to the DVD player as well...

Klipsch Ultra Pro Media 5.1, 500 watts of ear splitting joy. The sub will vibrate your pant leg if you turn it up high enough. Rattles the metal screen door on the front of my house and the door is about 40 feet away
The volume control bos is great, you can adjust sub, center and rear from it. Plus you can plug in headphones and switch to them. -
I've got a Megaworks 510D 5.1 system that I bought in Spring of 02 and it's held up quite well. Great for gaming and movies.
In the headphone department I use a set of MDR-V700 Sony headphones.

I have an Altec Lansing 5.1 set attached the speaker out on my PC for gaming, but the workstation shares the room with the home theater so there is also a digital optical line going to a Yamaha receiver which is running JBL speakers. I also have my old Marshall amp sitting nearby if I wanted to use that for something too.

Sorry beaver, I forgot to answer your question.
I do a lot of audio restoration work. Nothing serious, but enough so that I need a decent quality audio setup to hear the results. Mostly bringing life to old records and tapes, but I need enough quality to hear subtle differences when too much filtering is applied.
My hearing is 100% better than my sight, so I tend to hear imperfections in music much more than I see imperfections in video.
And it does make a kick-ass gaming system, too. -
I had some moth food burning a hole in my pocket
so one day last year I bought this:
The strange towers are made out of metal and plastic
and the small Sub box is coated compressed wood fibre.
It should sound like shite but I was amazed at the
quality. I had intended to buy Altec Lansing but
these sounded better. I think I went to 10 places
before I made my decision. I'm not a gamer (yet)
so I mosty have them switched off. -

Bah, tanks get owned by the Apache. Back when it was vanilla BF1942 I used to be scary accurate with any sort of bomber. Those were the days.
Actually for a really good experience with surround gaming get an EAX3 capable sound card and play FarCry with hardware sound cranked -
There is no best in audio. I was lucky enough to have
a friend who was an audio engineer - "lucky" in terms that
he would sometimes call and ask if he could park his "old" stereo
system at my place as he had no room for his new one.
At one stage he left two massive concrete lined speakers about 5 feet
high by 4 feet wide he had built himself plus a hand picked selection
of exclusive retro valve equipment. In those days
I had a Sony Hi FI Betamax. The sound just melted in the
ears like warm honey, even when watching video. It was the best
audio I have ever experienced.
It was a sad day when he took them back. I offered him an insane
amount of money (to my mind) and all sorts of inducements but
no deal. He had pre sold them to finance a parts buying trip to
Europe. He got $12,000 for them, sight unseen and unheard from
a fellow who had heard his new set of speakers. -

At one point he had the coolest speakers, The tweeters on top were made of clear plastic. Best way I can explain it is that it was a sheet of plastic between two pieces of metal mesh. You could see right thru them with no visible wires but could hear sound coming out of them.

That's one thing I didn't like about original, the odds were stacked in pilots favor. Desert Combat evens it out a lot. -
Try battlefield 1942, not much gore but very violent. Absolutley addicting if your into that type of game, maybe even if your not. If you can think of it it's in there. Planes, subs, tanks, jeeps, ships, parchuting, you can do anything and some of the servers support up to 64 players. Cable connection is an absolute must, decent comp and of course 5.1 surround sound speakers.
I have cable, a p4.2, speakers. Should I buy 1942 and add the
desert patch or do I buy the Vietnam one that seems
so popular? -

I'm one of the good chopper pilots. I like the Vietnam chopper physics better as it's closer to realistic in that you can come in fast and rear up to stop quick so you can drop your troops and run. In DC I can still take an Apache under bridges or hover pretty well behind things. Give Desert Combat Extended a try as well, it has some added features that are kinda fun, but when playing against veteran DCX players you're gonna get frustrated real fast.
