I got a new monitor today:

    Now everybody, don't be jealous.
It is a MAG Innovision 771FS-s 17 inch monitor. I have been a fan of MAG for a while. I bought it at best buy for a total of $88 including NY sales tax after MIR that will hopefully come.

Anyway, this brings me to my question. With my old crappy monitor, I turned off screensaver and auto-shut-off because I figured that interfered with DVD burning and I needed perfection. I don't want to ruin this monitor by leaving it on for long periods of time. However, I am worried about screensavers and what they might do to my DVDs which I burn often. I don't want to disable screensaver every time I have to burn something. I figured maybe the blank screen screensaver didn't take up any significant resources but I am still worried. What do you guys use?

  2. Yes, screensvers can cause problems/conflicts with your burns

Under Control Panel - Display - Screen saver tab - set to NONE - Apply

You can always turn 'em back on...but it's a good idea to keep 'em disabled during captures and/or burning.

  3. I don't use screensavers as a rule. However, I use the power-off function (5-10 minutes of inactivity).

  6. Why would you buy a new 17" crt monitor these days?
For only a hundred more or so than you would have
paid for the Mag, I got 2 professional 19" viewable
Ipex Flat CRT's 2nd hand (less than 6 months old) with
    warranty, and in pristine condition.

LCD, plasma and their ilk have crashed the CRT market
in all but the high end graphics and budget entry level
segments. If you want true Panatone color reproduction
at amazing refresh rates you can't miss with the
    current prices.

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. Mag is not a cheap brand
so you'll be looking for a new monitor years before any burn
in is possible so IMO you can forget the screensaver. Also
screensavers have a nasty habit of upsetting TSR processes.

19 inch is a little too big of a footprint for me. My old monitor started crapping up so I was kind of in a hurry for a new one. This MAG was the only one at Best Buy that seemed like a good deal in the 17 inch range. I don't like LCD monitors.

Some of you have responded that you turn off your screensaver before every burn. That seems like a lot of trouble especially if you burn DVDs and CDs every day multiple times a day.

What about "turn off monitor" option. Will that endanger my burns and captures?

Me 2. If I am doing some video encoding then I will turn it all off and shut the monitor off manually.

    I hate screensavers.

  9. just set it to turn off after 15 mins. No screensaver
Save yourself some money. That is unless you like to sit at your computer and watch the screensaver????

Or if you're worried about security on the box set the screensaver to come on after 15-20mins then set the monitor to shut off after 16-21mins

I live in an all bills paid apartment, so I don't care about electricity.

My monitors and computers are running all the time.

Well, I exchanged my Mag 17 inch monitor for a Mag 19 inch at Best Buy. It is like the exact same monitor but two inches larger. Even the same casing colors. Model 970FS-s $100 after MIR.

Anyway, after reviewing everyones' advice, I came up with my own new screen saver system.

    I have disabled auto screensavers.

However, I made a shortcut to the scrolling marquee SS on the desktop in case I need to go away from the monitor for a short time like to eat a sandwich or to the bathroom.

I have enabled the auto-monitor-shut-off after 30 minutes. This way, the monitor shuts off right after the usual 30 minutes it takes for me to burn and verify a DVDR at 4x. DVDRW burning will have the monitor turned off during verification. During these 30 minutes, the monitor will be on.

I will manually turn off the monitor when I deem it necessary like if I go away for a long time or do a long virus check or defrag.

Thanks again for helping me make my decision.

My new monitor at home is an LCD. It's so easy to turn it off during a long capture. I just disabled all the power saver settings to "Never"

Mine has a power switch and I just turn it off. It hasn't affected my burns at all. My computer settings are set to where it doesn't shut the monitor off and the Screen saver is disabled. The only thing I usually turn off is my router or modem and that's usually if I'm going to be off the computer for an extended period of time. Times when I do that are usually also when I shut my whole computer down, like an extended vacation. I have surge/spike protectors and auto-shutdown UPS in case of power outage and things like that. I'm working on a new case and cable design for my home I might introduce to the site soon. I had mention of it in another thread too.
