My apologies first off if this is the wrong place for this but wasn't sure what category this would come under.

Been discussing various "ripping" methods with a friend of mine. Both of us a raw beginners so neither of us knows for sure who is right.

We are both aware of programs such as CloneDVD for cloning a DVD but we are unsure of what others conversion options there are.

My friend want to download MPEG & AVI files and convert these to pure DVD i.e 5.1 sound, menus etc. I have said that I didn't think this would be possible and he could only write these as either VCD or SVCD.

We've been browsing through the site but haven't come up with anything that seems to answer our question. Found lots of references of conversion to MPEG/AVI but not from.

In short, can you point us to an article/FAQ that will tell us which formats can be converted to which and also which tools you need to carry out the process.

    Thanks

  2. In short, any format can be converted to any other format. Click on "Convert under the "How To" section at the left and select "AVI to DVD". You'll find lots of guides on converting AVI files to DVD (MPEG 2).

    Hello,
Try out dvdshrink and dvd2one for more varied ripping programs. Also, your mpeg2 sources have to have 5.1 encoded with it before you can convert it to dvd and play back the 5.1 sound (if it's only stereo you won't have 5.1 to convert). If there already in .mpg form load them in to any dvd authoring program and then burn them. Be warned some won't like the 5.1 sound. If you rip, ahem, "backup" a dvd and burn then you won't have issues (like backing up a disc, then burning the video_ts to a dvd-r {or +r }.
