  1. so I get back from vacation and note that there is a new version of ffmpegX available. I download it, install the new UNIX helper apps it asks for, then fire it up to do some work.

while it is working away, I read the "Read Me" and note that this new version, 0.9m, is for OS X 10.3 and up. ooops. I'm still running 10.2.8.

Even though things seem to be working well, I quit my encoding, trash ffmpegx 0.9m, trash all the new UNIX helper apps, re-download the last version of ffmpegX that is recommended for 10.2.8 (0.9k) and let ffmpegX re-install the required UNIX helper apps.

Everything installs fine except "gocr". ffmpegX gives me an error message of "##sudo: gnutar command not found".

    All greek to me.

Attempting to work around this, I check my backup disk for all installations of "gocr" and see that all the "gocr" files that there are also on my main disk in the same place and are the same versions (date and time). All files are in the usr/bin directory at the top level of the disk and are owned by root. So theoretically I couldn't have deleted any of them anyway, as I don't log in as root).

So -- why does ffmpegX 0.9k insist I need to install gocr when all the gocr files are seemingly in place?

Why can't ffmpegX re-install what it needs?

    Any help and advice appreciated.

  2. Install 0.0.9h then 0.0.9k.

Ok, that worked. AND it was a sufficiently obscure bit of information so that you are hereby accorded "Geek Genius" status!
