  1. What is the best software for capturing and editing home shot video from a Hi-8 analog camcorder. I want something easy to use with a few editing tools.

    Also what recording software to use for on air recording of TV shows etc.?

    Pls ignore me if you do not like an alternative. Get a DVD recorder and you have all what you wanted.

  3. If you already own an ATI AIW card, the ATI MMC software included with the card will do the capturing for you. It will capture in AVI or MPEG formats.

    As for editing software, that depends on your editing needs. If you are only removing commercials and cutting/joining segments, you can capture directly to MPEG and edit with MPEG-VCR or Cuttermaran. If you plan on doing anything more, you might want to capture to AVI.

    If all you want to do is move the tapes to DVD with a minimal amount of editing, a standalone DVD Recorder would also work.

    I purchased the TMPGEnc Xpress encoder for other reasons, and found that the cut editing built into it is GREAT for removing commercials from captured TV shows.

    Plus, it then saves as mpeg2 and ac3, so I can save the show to a DVD for future viewing easily, using DVD-lab Pro.

  6. Yeah, TMPEGEnc works fine and should suit your needs.

    Forget crap ATI MMC, it drops frames, not to mention many other problems....

    Ulead Video Studio is much more powerful and doesn't drop frames (made countless tests with both sw's, same set-up, same sources, same resolution, etc,etc);

    Nero Vision is also a nice sw;

    Time to take a second shot at this question - did not give an on-topic reply before.

    I have Intervideo WinDVR, and ATI MMC.

    WinDVR is a better product, and you can see it in the captured video.

    ATI MMC works.

    WinDVR 3 would not trigger a schedule, and I have been unable to roll back to WinDVR 2. Prior to upgrading to V3, WinDVR 2 was a great product. I don't know if it is something in the configuration of my system or what, and I have not had the time to work on it.

    ATI MMC captures shows, does not drop frames, and is reliable. Strange screen resolution - 640 x 240 - but that can be adjusted later.

    For longer term storage, when space is tight, I use Dr. DivX to shrink the shows. Actually, they look about as good, so I should see about capturing to DivX in the first place.....

    Hope this helps!
