I saw an ad for it. It's both NTSC PAL compatible. progressive scan. Apparently it's macrovision free. That's the extent of my current knowledge. Anyone have any further details? Thanks.

Found some more information. The first link is the model I was referring to above. Unfortunately it lacks component inputs. The second(Diva model) is more interesting. It also does vcd/svcd recording in addition to DVD-/+R recording.

The Diva unit is really backward...CD-R recording? Aren't we supposed to be moving away from that? No DVD recording but hard drive capture? Lameo....

The R3 looks more promising but only 2 inputs and 1 of them Rf? And that idea of firmware upgrades scares me. Does this mean that this thing is still very Beta? I'll stick with my Panasonic thank you...

No DVD recording but hard drive capture?

The second column lists DVD+R recording, for the DIVA. It's basically an all in one unit. I've sent an E-mail to confirm. No response yet.

As for the R3, yes, It should have had Component and optical. It was actually released in Asia one year ago. So it's no beta. It IS quite affordable. Under $500.00 Can, is the introductory price. It depends what you want it for. For VHS transfer(it has VBR recording) and recording television programs off an NTSC TV it may be worth a shot. I'd still make sure the place you buy it from has a good return/refund policy. At least until more information on it becomes available.

Panasonic will be out with they're E-85 model soon. The E-80 should drop in price. So that could be the better choice for the proven quality.

Only the Diva 2 has DVD record. The Diva 1 does not. Some of this stuff is Europe only (SCART connectors). Still don't know what I'd do with the Ethernet or Internet browser built into the unit. We'll just have to wait and see what will be in the North American version...

Well, I checked out the Malata R3 recorder last night at an Asian mall. I'm a little more impressed. The storekeep demonstrated the DVD to DVD recording function. He used a 5 minute short on DVD-R and recorded to DVD-RW. Well the quality from what I could see was excellent. Construction of the unit is pretty good. About the same as Malata's N996 player. This recorder's price is now below $490.00 Can. Unfortunately I forgot to ask about macrovision. He had other recorders there like the LiteOn.(overpriced, and appears to be shoddier than the Malata R3, and with LESS functions) He didn't have the DIVA 2 unit, but said he will be getting it in. Can't wait to check out that one.

Some more information on the Malata R3. It has the same mediamatics chipset as the Malata pvdv 520 has. In other words flawless conversion of PAL discs on an NTSC monitor. It is multiregion out of the box, and WILL do disc to disc copies of PAL discs but no PAL to NTSC conversion. That would be too good to be true. Still no answer to the macrovision question.

Since I forgot to mention it before the R-3 recorder DOES have component and optical connections.

I'm getting more and more information on Malata's new recorders. They're are about four available. Below is the link to the harddrive version, which will be imported to Canada shortly.(I heard 2 months or less) The R-3 is now showing up on U.S online sites like HKflix.com and of course Ebay.

You can find it in select stores in Toronto's Chinatown. If you're out in Ontario's sticks, the internet seeems to be the only other option.

  15. Where are people buying the diva and r3? What are the prices? Are you able to record 15 hours per side on a dvd and can you play it back on a TV? Thanks in advance for any information.

  16. If your source dvd player is macro free (these are easy to find) your recorder doesn't need to be macro free.

Im kind of waiting for one of those Tivo HDTV Recorders, $1000 but records 30 hours of hdtv.

If you're transferring VHS tapes with macrovision to disc the recorder has to be macrofree.
