I have a 5 computer network 2 of them are running Win98 OS the other 3 are Win2000NT. I use a Lynksis router for PC's 1,2,3 and PC's 4,5 are uplinked from the router to a Hub.
PC 1 = 2000NT
PC 2 = 98
PC 3 = 98
PC 4 = 2000NT
PC 5 = 2000NT
PC 1 communicates well with PC 2 and PC 3 but when PC 1 enters PC 4 or PC 5 Winexplorer freezes up. Basically all the 2000NT machines have problems sharing files, always freezes when one enters another.
However if any of the 2000NT need to access and share file with any 98 machines it is fine.![]()
I noticed on PC 1 when I right clicked on Network Neighborhood->Properties double clicked on Local Area Network->Properties and there was a General Tab and a sharing tab
I on PC 4 and PC 5 when I did the same thing I noticed just a General Tab?
I am thinking this could be the problem why my 2000NT machines have problems sharing. If this is the case how do I get a sharing Tab on PC 4 and PC 5?
NOTE: All PC's can see each other in Winexplorer and all PC's get a reply when I Ping each one. Just the file sharing problem.

In your network properties on PC 4 and 5, have you added File and File Sharing Printer for Microsoft Networks?
-
Yes I ticked that box on th General Tab, that is all that is there on PC 4 & 5 the General Tab.
PC 1 has the same General Tab but also a Sharing Tab, I think I need PC 4 & 5 to be the same as PC 1 both General and Sharing Tab.
-
so you checked the box that says file and print sharing for MS networks?
Did you reboot?
what do you see when;
start/run type cmd and hit enter
in the command prompt windows type
net share
What do you see?
C$....?
D$....?
IPC$....? -
I'm talking about this one in network properties...

EDIT: Cropped out extra whitespace in image so stiltman would STFU, because I could not edit it when I posted it, and was more interested in helping out someone in trouble than stilt having to scroll to read the post! :P
Please forgive me stilt! ....and anyone else I may have inconvenienced by having to scroll! :P

This is what I see
C$ C:\ Default share
ADMIN$ C:\WINNT Remote Admin
IPC$ Remote IPC
C C:\
The command completed successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>
Hope this helps

right click on a folder (C:\Temp) in the menu does it list "sharing..."?
right click on C:\winnt folder and select properties, do you see the sharing tab?
you can also share files via the cmd prompt
say you want to share the C:\Temp folder as CPUtemp with everyone access
type
net share CPUtemp=C:\Temp /unlimited
edit....
I notice you have the C: shared as C,
so you must of been able to create a share...
C is not a default name for a admin share
only share that are ending with the $ are defaults
edit2......
Thanks!

Yes I did create a share on the drive by right clicking on the C drive and creating it. (the hand showing on the drive) even with that done I still have the same problem.
If I do what you quoted will this make a sharing tab appear in the LAN properties? -
What do you mean by LAN Properties?Originally Posted by BCAESE

My C drive is already sharing (hand under drive display).
the problem is when I enter other computers with 2000 professional it freezes up and I can't share files.
If you right click on My Network Places->Properties, then double click on Local Area Connection->properties you get a General Tab and a Sharing Tab for PC 1.
For PC 4 & 5 when I do the same thing there is only a General Tab.
Since PC 1 is somehow configured different than PC 4 & 5, because it has the sharing tab, I was wondering if this is what was causing my problem -
What you are discribing is "internet connection sharing" not "file sharing"Originally Posted by BCAESE

I think he's talking about this one.Originally Posted by stiltman

I would, but they make no sense. The only thing he would get there is a general and a support tab, unless the internet connection sharing info shows up there if you turn it on. (Wouldn't know, never tried it).Originally Posted by stiltman
P.S. - Like the pic with no extra whitespace?????????? :P -
I am sorry guys.
Refer to 2 diagrams above Local Area Connection Properties
PC 1 has a general tab and a sharing tab
PC 4 & PC 5 has only a general tab.
I don't know if this is what is causing the freezing up when I try to file share. -
Could you please post a pic of the screens from both pcs?Originally Posted by BCAESE

Like I said, the sharing tab under NIC properties is for "internet connection sharing" it has nothing to do with "file sharing" between computersOriginally Posted by BCAESE

Now all computers can see each other via ping, but the ping command is different from browsing the network. Seems to me that the win2k computers are fighting over who is going to be the master browser. What I would do. open the "hosts" file with notepad and add each computers specifics to it. Then I would copy it to all the computers.
then, I would do a manual test to see if I could map a drive to another computers share.
Example:
from PC4
net use Q: \\PC1\share
or type
net use /?
Also, if you checked the box under "enable internet connection sharing..." take it out.
You only need that if you want say PC3 to access the internet via PC1's connection -
Really! All of them are set up as users and no passwords. I will set them up as admins no passwords. Do I have to do them same with my Win98 computers??Since non of the computers is a server and holds all the usernames and passwords, make sure your username and password is setup as admin on all computers.
I don't really know how to do that procedureSeems to me that the win2k computers are fighting over who is going to be the master browser. What I would do. open the "hosts" file with notepad and add each computers specifics to it. Then I would copy it to all the computers.
can you reply on how to do it or maybe Tekkieman can do one of his cool screencaptures
I guess I do this in Dos, but what results am I looking for?then, I would do a manual test to see if I could map a drive to another computers share.

from PC4
net use Q: \\PC1\share

I will untick this box but I don't know where it isAlso, if you checked the box under "enable internet connection sharing..." take it out.

Another screencapture maybe

Hate to disappoint!
Hosts:

edit: Sorry about that stilt. Your right of course. Mind is somewhere else today. Incorrect image removed. -
Nope, I wasn't talking about the built in the firewall. I was talking about "internet connection sharing". I can't do a screenshot, because I only have 1 NIC in this computer. You can see what I'm talking about by following what he wrote before and if you have 2 NICs:Originally Posted by tekkieman

I guess I will be resaving the host file on each PC. Do I resave it as a notepad document? Is that ok?
