  1. I recently got a dvd-rom for my computer. I want to take the dvd's I can play and make them into a file I can play on my computer like an avi or something similar. Can someone tell me what to do?

Look into DIVX. Very compact and a good format for computer use.

You could encode to Xvid or if you have Nero 6 try their new Nero Digital. Or if you have plenty of disk space create an ISO with DVDDecrypter then mount/play them with Daemon tools.

  5. Just rip the DVD with SmartRipper then use PowerDVD or WinDVD to play the files from your hard drive.

If you just just want to view the MOVIE, and space is a premium, convert it to divx or xvid. If you want to keep all the features and extras, rip it to your hard drive using dvdshrink.

Converting it to divx has the advantage of being able to archive it to cd to free up hard drive space, assuming you have a cd burner.

This is just my opinion, of course.

I don't get it? Why do you want to do that instead of just playing the DVD you own directly on the computer 's DVD/ROM drive??? I could see it is you are traveling with your lap top and you need a few movies to watchc in a hotel.
DIVX and NERO Dig then would make sense.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

  8. The main reason I want to do this is I have a stand alone dvd recorder that I made some dvd's of my favorite music videos. What I want to do is be able to make the music videos into mp3's or wav files. Maybe that's what I should have said in the first place, but there are also some things I have that I want to be able to make small clips from and I don't have a clue what I'm doing! I dowloaded both smart ripper and gordon knot, but after I get the vob file I'm lost. I know how to make an mp3 or a wav file from an avi file, but how do I make an avi file from a vob file! BTW, thank you to everyone who has responded to my post! I'm one step closer to my goal and I appreciate all your help!!!

Well the easiest non-tech solution would be to use TotalRecorder. It will record anything you can hear on your computer. It will output as wav or MP3. Comes in very handy for all sorts of audio streams from any source.
