  1. Is that even possible? If so, then what kind of hardware, software do I need? Is it possible with a CD-RW drive?

    Thanks

    Yes you can burn DVD nowadays. The format that is available at the moment is called DVD-R(W). Later this year DVD+R(W) will be introduced.

    To make a fully function DVD you will need DVD authoring software such as DVDit etc.

    No, with a CD-R(W) it is not possible to make a DVD, You can however make a so-called mini-DVD, which is a CD-R(W) with the structure (files) of a DVD. These mini-DVD's only play on a few DVD Players however and can only hold about 15 mins of audio/video.

    @Sean

    Don't put your hopes up too high. People are experiencing enough problems with the +90 CD-R's as it is. I can imagine that with the 120 CD-R's will cause even more havoc with Players and Writers!

    As for the the so-called (148min) DDCD-R's (Double Density) the developers of this product have already stated that a new type of Writer/Player is needed.

  9. aldus4 is right. DDCD-Rs can't be read by ordinary CD/DVD drives. In any case, these media aren't burnt in a way compatible with VCD's anyway (i.e., MODE2). I don't quite remember now as it's been a while since I read the review, but I think that the DDCD-R's have data burnt in some form of packetised format.

    That is, these CDs are only useful for data and can't be used for audio CDs, VCDs, etc.

  10. Hey, why be thinking about mini-dvd as a storage medium when rewritable DVD drives are already here? They won't be pricy for very long, and even if they are the alternative requires some serious investment (i.e.- hardware mpeg2 compressor).
    Hope the DVD+RWs have some kind of built in mpeg2 compression so hard drive space will become a non-issue.
