I am not trying to double post - I may have mistakenly placed this under the Media Heading prior. Thank you.
Hey All,
Hope all is well with everyoneI had a quick questions / hope for advice regarding data disc burning and adding appending of sessions on dvd-r's.
I am burning data discs, and constantly adding or changing folder's contents with appz or jpg's, etc.
I have the usual suspects installed being Roxio 6, Sonic RNMax DX 4.61, Prassi DVD 2.x, and Nero 6.3x.
However, they all have faults when it comes to archiving onto dvdr's, and subsequently appending the sessions to add more data later.
Roxio - never burns all the files, virtually useless...![]()
Nero - Does well most of the time, but I simply dislike it, as it's revised hourly it seems - sorry to all it's fans in advance, no offense meant
RNMax DX / Prassi - burn flawlessly, however, when I import or reload a disc, none of the folder structure shows up in the layout manager, so I can't figure out how to drop files back into the folders I'd like to, to append / add to them properly and orderly.
Ideally I'd like to use the Sonic / Prassi combo, as I use it for all my a/v TS burns, so I could then cut down on the appz loaded on the machine. If anyone has any info, guidance, or ideas, I am very appreciative.
Thanks as always Guys !!!!

You chose the wrong forum again since it's not related to DVD Authoring either.
Anyway, why would you ever consider using multisessions? That's a risky way to keep data since you always run a chance that some program/computer might not be able to read it.
Considering current media prices and writing speed, I'd recommend either burning single-session CD-R/DVDR or using RW overwriting them periodically. Since you apparently back up the data at least daily, get a bunch of RW for each day of the week for example, and recycle them once a week. -
Dimmer,
Thank you very much for your opinion.
I am not trying to be argumentative or to begin an argument with this reply.
First, burning a DVD ISO consisting of data is technically DVD authoring as you are authoring the file structure onto a DVD media disc. So this is the most applicable form for this post.
Secondly, waste not want not. While media is relaitvely cheap, it does seem somewhat foolsih to needlessly waste it by burning a new copy each time you wish to update a directory or file.
On CDR's all of the programs I mentioned work well. However with DVDR's I am encountering issues.
I have been for years posting and try to whenever able to help people with advice and techniques and guidance on this board with regards to encoding, authoring, etc.
With my post, I was / am simply trying to see if any others have come across similar problems, or can express other approaches to archiving.
Thank you again for your reply.

Spidey,
You are very kind. I simply mentioned about the Authoring forum being not the best place because in reality most of the people going through this forum are interested in DVD-Video authoring. Therefore, you might not get the highest possible response rate.
I can confirm that some guy at Doom9's forum few weeks ago came across a serious problem while trying to read the files from a multisession DVD. The best we could do for him was finding a way to recover the files but no permanent solution. Granted, he used Nero.
Probably the best advice I can give you is related to the general backup practices, which I learned working in relatively large companies. Commonly, routine backup is performed on regular basis (e.g. daily) using rewritable media, normally tapes but DVDRW could do, too. Then the media is stored, preferably off-site, for a certain period of time such as two weeks. After that period, it's re-used for the next backup. Often, the backup for the last day of the month is retained for a year, again off-site in an underground fireproof vault.
Either way, you might consider using RW media instead of multisession.
Hope this helps. -
Dimmer,
Thank you again very much.
I'll check into Doom9's area, and see if I may come up with anything.
LOL...the data is not so crucial I need to invest in the vault for home..it simply is keeping applications discs up to date, etc.
Thank you agian very much~~~Spidey~~~
