  1. I have just bought a new DVD recorder (Philips HDRW720). I want to edit the (rather simple) menu made by the recorder itself, by using tmpgenc dvd author 1.5 (or any other program). The problem is tmpgenc can't seem to find the audio. I first rip the +RW disc using dvddecrypter, and then use "add dvd video" in tmpgenc. I click the appropriate title and choose "dolby digital ac-3 48000 hz 2 channel" (the only audio option). However in the "add clip" dialogue box it now just says" audio input filename=unspecified - there is no audio". If I go ahead and write the VOB-files to my harddrive, powerdvd says "no audio". however it played the original DVD+RW disc just fine. I have tried more than one disc. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

  2. I'm wondering whether your problem is something to do with your ripping process. In fact I'm not sure that you need to rip the disc with dvd decrypter at all - there's no encryption to remove.

I have a DVDR75 which records AC3 audio just like the HDRW720 . To re-author stuff that I've recorded, I just move the DVD+RW to my PC, start up TmpegDVDAuthor and choose the "Add DVD Video" option, browsing to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD+RW. I choose to copy the required track to the hard drive (you'll see two of everything - just go for the first one) and TDA reads it from disc and produces a single MPEG file. I can then edit that MPEG file with MpegVCR if necessary, or just continue the authoring process, menus etc.

Bear in mind that if you don't have the AC3 plugin for DVD AUthor, you won't be able to hear any sound when you edit. The DVD will still be authored with AC3 sound though if you don't alter any recompression settings.

Give the above method a try - hope it works for you.

    Hello,
I would suggest ripping the audio from the vob and save it as a wav or mp2 file. Then load your vob and choose the stripped audio as the audio input source. You shouldn't have sync issues since its from the source video. Good luck.

    Hello,
I believe its faster to rip with a ripper even on nonencrypted discs. It can take a looong time to drag and drop through normal windows procedures. Just my expierience though.

You must also go into the preferences part of DVDDecrypter and make sure you disable File Splitting. I ran into the same problem a few days ago....AGAIN.....because I keep forgetting to disable the File Splitting. If it is one big chunk of video/audio....TMPGEnc DVD Author will accept it.

  6. Thanks for the replies. But I still can't get any audio. I tried to rip it directly off the +rw disc into TDA. It produced a single .mpg file which plays perfect with audio in Powerdvd. However TDA still can't find the audio part. I also tried "no file splitting" in dvddecrypter. same thing. I guess my DVD recorder records the audio in a non-standard way into the VOB files. I wonder if it would help edit the IFO files using ifoedit or something? I don't know how to to that however.

    Hello,
If you have audio at all its there. Use tmpgenc and click file, mpeg tools. Click demultiplex tab. Open mpg file. You should see the video portion listed with stats (1 line) and the audio portion with stats (1 line also). Double click the audio line and save as a wav or mp2 audio file. Then load that into tmpgenc dvd author as the audio and the original mpg as the video. That should do it.

  8. PowerDVD is picking up the audio so we know it's in the MPG stream. Can't understand why TDA isn't picking up the audio. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app? What happens if you click the Browse button in the Add Clip box Audio Settings and select the same MPG file that appears under Video Input filename...?

Anyway, as Yoda313 suggests, try using TmpegPlus mpeg tools to demultiplex the audio from the .mpg file that TDA gives you. Audio details before you demultiplex should be something like:

    private stream_1 (0x80) Dolby Digital (AC3) 48000Hz (256kbps)

If the .AC3 file is in the same folder as the .M2V file and they have the same main filename then TDA should pick up the associated audio file automatically. If the names are different, you can browse to it.

This all seems very odd! Hope you get things sorted.

I've had the same exact problem occasionally with TDA but I have thrown such a barrage of "OK...Lets try THIS" at TDA and Ulead MF2 that I tend to get the solutions confused..

  10. If I try to browse to the file with the audio in it (VTS_01_01.VOB i presume) I get "Illegal audio format. You can only use AC-3, MPEG-1 or PCM". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling latest version 1.5.20.62, but same thing happened. If I select "Copy clip video data to HDD" it generates a .mpg file, but still can't find the audio in the "add clip" dialogue box afterwards.

However I can open the resulting .mpg file in Womble MPEG-VCR and MPEG Video Wizard 2003 without error and it plays the audio part just fine. I think I will use MPEG Video Wizard for the editing from now on, because I found out it is much quicker to edit the mpeg file this way. Also, when I save the edited .mpeg file from mpeg wizard (using "automatic *.mpg" with no re-encoding) this mpeg file opens in TDA with sound and all afterwards. I then make the menus from TDA. Thanks!
