Read Speed

I have the Sony DRU-510A DVD bruner. I love the burner it is great, the only problem I am having with it is ripping times. It takes about 45 min to read and rip the DVD and 15 min to burn. Is there any way to speed up the read/rip process? Even if its by a new burner which is fastest?

I don't think a rip-lock hack for the Sony510 exists.

You' better buy a Liteon166 or a Toshiba1802 DVD-ROM
They are very fast at ripping (if flashed with a hacked fw)

Nothing exists for the Sony 500/510 except for the official firmwares. The encryption for the 500/510 is so sophisticated that nothing has ever been done as nobody has yet to be able to get past it. This is one big reason why these drives are not as popular and not as talked about, because this encryption results in a much diminished level of backing from the community.

If you want faster reading, then get the Toshiba or any of the LiteOn combos or DVD-ROM drives (as reading speed hacks exist for all of them, not just the 166S).

I looked for a LiteOn DVD-ROM drive everywhere. The only place that I found that had a LiteOn is Circuit City. They have the Lite-On 16x Internal DVD-ROM Drive Brand/Model: LIN XJHD166. Does a hack exist for this LiteOn? If so where can I find it?

First off, know where to shop. Go to www.newegg.com and buy it there. It's one of the most reliable online retailers ever to exist. You can get the 166S or the newer 167T for only around $30. (personally, I'd take getting a brand-new drive from a reliable retailer than gamble with chance on eBay)

Second, There is no such thing as the "LIN XJHD166S"... there is, however, a "LiteOn/JLMS XJ-HD166S"... or for that matter, there doesn't exist a "LIN" drive anywhere! Don't put so much faith in what Circuit City or any other retailer says, since they're all prone to error. If you actually look at the drive itself or install it in your system, you will find that it's not some "LIN" drive.

code65536 you coulndt be more correct. I went to curcuit city and saw the LIN XJHD166. Picked it up and opened the box and found it to be the 166S. Stupid circuit city! Either way I did finally get the right drive. Thanks all.

I thought my Sony DRU510A was a great drive until reading these posts. Is the firmware keeping me from completing read tests above 2x when using DVDinfo (unregistered version)? I have installed Intel Application Accelerator and it shows DMA is enabled. Oh well. Maybe in a year or so I can convince my wife that the $160 Sony is obsolete and can be replaced by something 4 times better at half the price.
