A/V Sync made easy??????

I have for months now, been totally frustrated by my own inability to solve the numerous audio sync problems i've come across with some downloaded files. As i am still a newbie it took me hours upon hours to even understand some of the guides i came across; still couldn't solve the problem-i know, total muppet!!!

Until now!!!

One feature of Mainconcept Mpeg Encoder i stumbled across was its ability to multiplex the files and also 'delay' the introduction of either the video or audio stream by whatever degree of incompatible sync there was.

1. VirtualDub to find a point within the file where you KNOW there is a sound (e.g door slamming) and note this time against the actual action itself. Do this 3 or 4 times and you may see the delay by simply looking at the frame counter and time display. In which case you can skip no.3.

Really depends on how thorough and exact you want to be!!

2. TMPGenc to DeMultiplex-(separate audio & video)

3. Drop your Demuxed audio file in a suitable audio tool to then find the 'same' time for that particular action. Make a note of difference between audio and video.

4. Open Mainconcept. Go to 'Details' and then into 'Advanced'. You will see 'multiplexing' on a tab. Once there you will see where you can change the video and audio streams for when it multiplexes. Note that these (audio & video) should differ by the amount that you noted earlier. (Keep 'Audio 1' and 'Audio 2' as the same figure as each other)

5. Done.

I hope this helps some other newbie out there. For all you experienced users i'm sure you got this nailed anyway-apologies for the simplistic notes but still learning!

or does it have to do it as the final part of encoding?

It will mux separately.

Once i've split with TMPgenc (avi's), i drop in each stream via 'Browse' button, i change audio & video (only if outta sync) streams, then set to MPEG2 (DVD) and run off all at once. Mainconcept does a decent conversion, not the absolute best, but good enough. And a damn sight quicker than TMPGenc-even though that is an excellent program.

Another way to skin the same cat....

You can also do that with BBMPEG which is freeware, and will also mux your existing audio and video without re-encoding (I am guessing Mainconcept must re-encode)

Therefore having de-muxed in TMPGEnc, you could load the audio and video files into BBMPEG (Select "Start Encoding" then "Settings"), set the delay as you have described and re-mux with no loss of quality and (if you don't have Mainconcept) no extra money.

This does work perfectly, for audio that is out of sync, proprotionately...that is out by one second at the beginning, and the end.
