ok thats fine and dandy, but how could you do this? I have an old vcr i would like to tinker with and in the event i screw it up i have another one as well... so, i really dont have much to lose."Another way the get "free" from Macrovision is changing the value of some capacitors and resistors on the VCR's AGC (Automatic Gain Control). Making it gets a slower reply, or disabling it. Macrovision just exploit VCR's AGC, by introducing false sync pulses on video signal."

Of course, you need to have the full schematics of the VCR before "tinkering" with it. That may be hard to find nowadays unless someone already did it for your model and posted it on the web. In addition, at least moderate level of knowledge of analogue electronics would be required.
