Problem capturing with AVI_IO, Win2K

I am having a problem with AVI_IO on my Win2K system (i'll go into detail in a sec). The error occurs when I go to capture - either manually, or through the timer function. The error is: "fatal error: press ESC to stop recording."

I've recently upgraded my computer, and as a result had to switch to Windows 2000. I was previously running Win98, with AVI_IO, on my ATI AIW card - using the VFW wrapper with no problems. My new setup is essentially the same as the old setup minus the motherboard, and sound.

OLD SYSTEM:
Windows 98
ASUS CUV4X, PIII 800 (integrated audio).
ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder (oct 2000, 'regular' drivers for win 9
Adaptec 29160 w/ Western Digital 18GB U160 10K hard drive
Western Digital 80GB ATA100 7200 hard drive

This setup would allow me to capture to either drive with the same performance - for some reason, I'd ALWAYS get frame drops about 1 every two-three minutes no matter what was running in the background. In fact, could actually be running TMpeg encoding some AVI's AND STILL be able to capture with AVI_IO with no apparent loss of performance.

Besides, I didn't mind the drops, and AVI_IO was consistent on Win98. The only thing AVI_IO would do if other apps were running was to take a little longer (up to 40 seconds) to start recording - I figure this involved setting allocating memory/file space, and really, it was not a problem because it worked every time.

New setup:
Windows 2K w/ SP1, and SP2 installed
Tyan Tiger MP w/ two AMD MP +1800s
Sound Blaster Ensonique audio
ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder (oct 2000 'regular' driver for Win2K)
Adaptec 29160 w/ Western Digital 18GB U160 10K hard drive
Western Digital 80GB ATA100 7200 hard drive

Ok, on here, things are very unstable. Even with a fresh reboot, AVI_IO has a high rate of failure when I attempt to capture to the 80G drive. Occasionally, on the 18G (U160 scsi) drive, it will also fail. It will almost always fail on both drives if anything else is running, or has run, or if I blink, or sneeze. What happens is that I get an error "fatal error: press escape.." when it starts to capture. If it should start a capture, however, it works like a charm - no frame drops or anything. THis is quite frustrating...

Has anyone encountered this problem? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

hmm, that might have to do with you running progz while you are capturing unless your other processor is handling that which should not make a difference.
Try capturing with nothing running but AVI_IO.

If it still gives error, tell me when it started once you installed win2000.
If having same problems, try sonic foundry media on demand producer or virtual dub
