I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times, but I could not seem to find the right search to find my answer... So please don't abuse me too much for asking the question.![]()
I want to take footage from my DV camera (through firewire) and convert it to MPEG without first transfering the huge avi file to my harddrive.
I have the following tools:
SceneAnalyzer
Virtualdub MOD (MPEG)
Adobe Premiere 6.5
MainConcept Encoder
TMPGEnc Pro
(A few other tools for DVD authoring and utility)
Is this possible![]()
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!![]()
Thanks

It's certainly possible but why would you want to degrade your video so much? You could easily playback your footage through composite cables to a VIVO card and cap using a codec of your choice. However, you would have no say in the quality or filesize - meaning you could not guarantee your final output would fit on your chosen media. Also, editing MPEG can be problematic (though you do not mention this as a requirement) but it may be something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the response...
However, I still did not get what I was hoping for. I have a dance recital on VHS and I want to put it on DVD. Since I do not have a capture card, i wanted to use my camera as the A to D converter. Then take the digital version and "import" it to my PC via the firewire port. -

What is possible, though, is that if you have a camera with pass-through, then you can still transfer - but you will still have to deal with the (rather large) AVI. -
Since you have the standalone MainConcept encoder (presumably), you can encode directly to MPEG from a DV source using its capture capability. If you have a reasonably fast machine, you can do the encoding in real-time. If your machine is not sufficiently fast, it has a bufferring option (no lost frames) so that you are doing simultaneous capturing and encoding. In that case, it finishes encoding some time after capture is completed. Length of time depends upon your machine. I've tried the software with both VHS and satellite sources and it works OK. I used an ADVC-100, but it should work with any camcorder with pass-through. Firewire is firewire.
Remember, you're still working with VHS which will not look terribly good, regardless.
Hope this helps.
