converting DVD to AVI

I have been trying to convert DVD movies to AVI files. I have been using moves that are 5+gig on the DVD each about 2hours in length. I have been using DVD2AVI. I am using divx high-motion and low-motion codec (sorry I dont have specific versions). I have experimented with bitrates between 4500 and 6000 (the max). The resulting AVI always comes out at around 2+gig in size.

Anyways what tool(s) whould I be using and what settings and codec for converting DVD to AVI, at best quality while keeping the divx/avi file size at around 700mb in size?

Well, after ripping, make a AviSynth script to open all the VOBs and play the script in Virtual Dub mod while saving to AVI.

A good package to do this is the user-friendly AutoGK. If you're feeling brave (and have some more experience) you can try the full-blown Gordian Knot. For accurate filesizes, use two passes.

It's essentially a GUI for what Tommyknocker has suggested.

wow, reviewing the website for AutoGK, and reviewing the tutorial page, it just seems too simple. Rip the VOBs to disk, point AutoGK to the files, select output file, select output size - in my case 700mb so 1-disk - , select audio and let it go? and it will then create a xvid or divx of 700mb, give or take?

and that is without getting into any advanced features.

What I usually do is set it to 695MB, and it usually hits that target size to within 500kb using two-pass with DivX. It really is a dead simple package to use.

If you find it hasn't got enough features or control, you can try the full Gordian Knot which I use - it's very feature-rich but not very friendly to the newer user.

I have used AutoGK for a 1-CD rip of a 90 minute DVD - all composed from a 1Gb VOB. I am now processing another 90 minute DVD - but there seem to be 4 x 1Gb VOBs!!! Is there something amiss, as I quickly run out of hard disc space ... ?
