  1. Just wondering if anyone has burned any backups of a few dual layer movies? for true 1 to 1 backups.

Also is there media out? and about how much is it running i know prices will drop soon enough.

Can't wait to cut the recompression step out saves tons of time i don't have!!!

I don't know if you are going to save time.

DVD Decrypter takes 10-20 minutes to make a folder full of decrypted files, if they're small enough, you burn to a single layer.

DVDShrink, AutoshrinkIso, takes 20-30 minutes to decrypt, re-encode,AND burn.

You are STILL going to have to decrypt and demacro, so what time are you thinking of saving?

And, a 4.37 disk is good, to my eye, for a 3 hour movie (Merlin comes to mind, cannot tell it from the original ). If you can see better video quality in copying the entire thing to a 13 buck disk, I say go Valenti's route, buy the second copy as backup.

    Cheers,

    George

who knows how the ps2 is gonna react to the dl media?? this early in the game i think its gonna automatically open the tray and hurl it at your head for even tryin. first thing is first, lets see how dvd players react to it

as far as ps2 backups, i would stick to known methods for now.

for the xbox, you dont need to,just install it to the xbox hard drive and then send it via ftp to a pc,and create an iso, then stand back as you have a working backup, without dummy files, and no dual layer shit.

  8. there is a new disc for the ps2 called the hdloader.. pretty much you have your network adaptor & hdd (40 to 120gb), boot up the hdloader disc, and then insert your ps2 game and it will install it to the harddrive.. you can then run all the games from the harddrive.. pretty shweeet..

the ps2 requires no modification at all for this either..

It will require a modification for Imports...but yeah, originals from the PS2's region will install. I'm hearing like 80% of games will work on it, unfortunately DVD-9's are not on that list. Later revisions might support DVD-9 though.

As for DVD+RDL, it seems like a good idea but its gunna end up being too damn expensive for a while to be practical. Most of my movies, I could buy a second copy cheaper than DVD+RDL media would cost me plus I wouldn't have to worry about a coaster either.

i thought the largest hdd for ps2 was 40gb that sony makes to be compatable? think i heard whispers about using any hdd but needs a mod chip of some sorts to work? i guess there's a certain way sony formats the drives so only they can sell it? inform me mr jeex

120GB is the max the Network Adaptor can read. With any modchip and the proper formatting tools any Hard Drive can be made compatible. Games require some modifications though, unless you use the DMS3 mod. That can auto-patch games that work with the hard drive. For a brand...anything but Western Digital. WD dont fit the NA.

Every press release I have read has said that DL media will cost about twice that of regular media. And that's just at its release time. It will surely be less then that after a year or two. Its roughly the same price per gig as media is right now. That's not bad at all if you ask me.

Two years ago 99% of people here (on this board) was able to make SVCD at best.
About two years before that most of people at all had no clue what stinky VCD is (excluding people in Asia), and only some already knew what DVD is...

Two years is a very long term for technology. 2 years later you will be most likely thinking about some 'blue laser' or any similar 20+GB disc media, those dual layer DVD-Rs will be all gone from your mind

  15. for it to be realistic for me.. 5 yrs lol
thats about the time it will take to make a descent market entry.

I feel for the poor slop that buys cheap dual layer media and half the spindle doesn't work.. lol

  16. I'm gonna have to call BULLSH!T on this as I purchased my Sony DRU-500a almost 2 yrs ago (Dec. 2002) and it's still virtually top of the line with 4x -/+ R burning speed. True, there are 8x and 12x drives out, but these drives are using PCAV or whatever it is (starts at 4x, ramps up to 6x, etc etc) and are also burning media at speeds higher than spec as just 8x media is still rare and expensive. When I got this drive noone even cared about 4x media (in the -R camp) as 2x media was quick enough and still expensive. Just in the past 4-6 months tho 4x has really taken a nose dive in price and is right at that price/performance point to really be the perfect media.

When I burn something, I don't want to worry about 'oh will it play back in a few years' or 'will my friends have compatability problems in their DVD standalones' or anything like that. I burn TY's ONLY and @15min/ea it's more than fast enough.

I don't mean to say that this Sony DRU-500a is top of the line, it's obviously not. But for how 'old' it is, it can still crank out 4x -R Taiyos like there's no tomorrow and thats great. Nothing is sacrificed, all my nero read speeds are smooth as can be and playback is great. No pixelation issues, no stuttering, nothing. And still after about 18 months, what improvements have there been? 4x -RW? 8x+R ? 12x+R? 8x+R media is scarce enough, and as I'm a devout -R fan it's not my thing anyway. I mainly burn DVD-Roms and -R gives me the best compatability. Even +R DL is still to be seen and I'm sure that will have more than its fair share of problems for a while. (Tho I am eager to see it arrive and its results).

My first DVD-R burn was in August 2001, almost 3 years ago.
    Maybe I'm 1% ?
