im a little confused.
i use to rip dvds to div x and with great results on a 700mb cd. now with a full blown dvd that is 8 gigs i use dvd2one.
without compression the results are poor. if divx was fairly ok but on only 700mb, why are these copies so poor in quality when u shrink the size?
it almost seems like you better off making full blown divx backups onto the dvd using all 4.7 gigs.
any help?

I don't understand. What are you requesting help with?
I've never seen a divx movie that looked as good as a properly done DVD backup. -
That's because with divx, you're re-encoding in a different format, that performs better at lower bitrates. DVD2OneX simply compresses the MPEG2 video stream, but keeps it in the MPEG2 format (without re-encoding), so it will still be compatible with DVD players, but won't take much time doing it. Depending on the disc, the quality will be higher or lower. If the quality is too low when using DVD2OneX's method of shrinking, you can try using DVDRemaster, which has a 'Downsizer' mode, which actually re-encodes the MPEG2 at a lower bitrate, yielding better quality, but taking significantly longer.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."
