Im just starting backing up my dvds. should I rip the dvd and save it on my hard driveas the 7 gigs or should I just use dvd shrink to save it as the shrink size. will I be able to edit more audio and chapter after I use shrink if I want to make better copys later in life. I plan to save all my movies on my hard drive and keep the collection on external drives.

Either way is fine. If you rip with DVD decrypter you save everything exept the copy protection to your HD.
With DVD Shrink if you leave parts out then obviously those parts are gone. However you can shrink as many times as you like and either just add more compression each time or remove more bits each time.
You miust have a fair amount of HD space if you are going to store lots on HDs .
Another way to keep back ups and keep a lot of quality is to convert the main movie and the main audio track to Mpeg4 (something klike Xvid) .
That way a good quality DVD Rip will take up around 700MB. -
I have a removable HD bay with 3 X 200GB drives I rotate in and out of it. I use one to store ISOs of my XBOX games, one to capture and edit footage from TV/VHS, and the other to trade caps and other assorted stuff with mates. Cost me a little bit but a pretty good setup IMO. I have contemplated using one exclusively to store images of my 35 commercial DVDs.
If in doubt, Google it. -
