  1. I am looking for dvd-r and I heard that Ritek makes really good ones? Need some suggestions on where to buy (Meritline.com) seems ok so far....I have a Lite-on LW-411S and APEX 2110 dvd player.

    Ritek G04 DVD-R 4X (Blank Silver Matte) $44.50
    Ritek G04 DVD-R 4X (Blank Silver Shiny) $39.00
    Ritek G04 DVD-R 4X (Ridata Branded) $39.50

Not sure whats the differences in prices. Don't they all have the purple bottoms?

    Thanks

  2. You can't judge a disc by the colour of the writing side - a burner and the subsequent reading device does not "see" like you and I do. It just so happens that a lot of the better quality discs seem to have darker dyes if the opinions of this site is anything to go by. But it's highly subjective - I regularly use discs with a lighter dye without problems.

I have posted before in some depth about colours, so maybe a search for my username and keywords like "colour" may be a useful exercise.

Anyway, the matte ones are probably inkjet printables, the shiny ones probably just have a shiny top with nothing on them for thermal transfer processes and / or permanent markers etc, and the Ridata probably just have the manufacturer's logo on them (Ridata is a trading name of Ritek).

Apart from these differences, they're the same disc, so it's up to you what you want.

  3. The matte ones simply have a frosty top, they aren't printable.

Out of the three, I prefer mattes.

If you go by Lordsmurf, the resident board media expert, the highest quality DVD-R currently being made is a Maxell branded, which has a lighter dye than Ritek or Ridata.

The Pioneer is the top, but it's no longer being made.

  5. Maxell is extremely expensive compared to Ritek no? I am looking for mid priced 50 packs of dvd-r.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with RITEK/RIDATA G04's. That is assuming they aren't fakes. Your pricing is in line with current RITEK pricing. I'd go with the matte so you can write on them.

Yeah, in his opinion - I for one disagree (I have had trouble with Maxell and cross platform compatibility), but there you go. Each to their own and I do have access to some pretty nasty hardware. Ritek is my weapon of choice for overall compatibility based on my experience and that of my colleagues.

It's a shame when you quoted me you didn't quote the bit about the colour not making any real difference and it being subjective... I for one actually said myself that I've used lighter dyes without problems.

It's all to do with reflectivity of light at a certain wavelength. The fact that an optical block in a DVD player is tuned to one wavelength (two if it plays CD's) and your eyes are not, means the colour is not in any way a definitive guide to quality. Look how many colours of CD-R's there are these days. They all do the same job and look the same to the hardware. What brought this up is the comment from the original poster and purple bottoms - some people seem obsessed by these, probably because CD-R's now come in practically any colour you can think of. The same is not (yet) true with DVD media, unless you want to split hairs and talk RW, of course...

I quoted the entire sentence about you getting the feeling that the board members feel that the better media has darker dye. I wasn't disputing your personal observations. Like ********, we all have an opinion and when it comes to media, we're not shy about sharing it with others

    He's full of blue horseshit!

Taiyo Yuden. All other media is shite.

(It's a toss-up between Maxell and Taiyo Yuden in my books at this time. They are both outstanding...)

I was waiting for the Taiyo plug

There ought to be a TY rep lurking here. I'm sure they'd cut you a check in a minute for all the free PR.

I don't have enough history with Maxell yet. I just received 100 of them Friday and I'm still working on burning the Ridata matte silver. I've burned maybe half a dozen of the Maxell on the Panny E50 and the LF-D311. No coasters so far.

What scared me away from the Taiyo is the steep, steep price. I can get the Maxells for $1.38 ea and if they all burn OK, I won't switch unless Maxell goes with CMC to make their DVD-R

I got some G04 shiny tops from Meritline, they ID'ed right, but did not say RIDATA on the hub like the matte ones. I'll try the branded next to see if the edges are less bumpy (plus currently they are now cheaper). All in all the G04's are all I'll ever use. No coasters and a great match for my burner.

Just curious, but I see TYs for $1.15 each. Maybe you should look again if you are getting your Maxell for $1.38.

Also, stay away from the orange top Ritek. They have huge dye errors.

Still a few bugs in the system...
