  1. I am new to all of this, but my home is being featured on HGTV on May 21st, and I would like to capture the show from DirecTV or cable into my PC. After reading most of the reviews on capture cards I decided to purchase the ADVC-100 from Canopus. What else will I need to edit (remove commercials, etc.), to burn DVD’s, and to upload (with permission) the show to my website www.2004Home.com? What additional software or hardware will I need and for what?

    I am planning to connect the DirecTV box to the ADVC-100 to my laptop. What do I need to do next?

    610 Dell Lattitude laptop Pentium 3 1000MHz
    60 GB HD
    * SIIG USB 2 & FireWire 1394 combo CardBus
    * ADVC-100 capture
    * TDK IndiDVD 440N External or Sony DRX 510UL DVD burner
    Permission from the show to post on the web

    I also would like to convert a large collection of Laser Video Discs and some VHS tapes to DVD in the near future.

    Sincerely,
    USA Gaucho

    There is a capture program called ScenalyzerLive that many Canopus ADVC-100 users claim is probably the best program to use for capture.

    As for editing ... if you just need to do very simple editing ... like trim the start and end points of your capture as well as cut out TV commercials ... then all you need for that is VirtualDubMod.

    As for converting the captured DV AVI to MPEG-2 DVD spec you should take a look at either TMPGEnc or Cinema Craft Encoder aka CCE BASIC.

    I find AviSynth along with VirtualDubMod (for editing) and CCE are the way to go but AviSynth can be tricky for a newcommer.

    P.S.
    Oh yes you will also need a DVD Authoring program. One of the best and easiest to use is TMPGEnc DVD Author although it is somewhat limited to how FANCY you can make your menu designs BUT it is very stable and easy to use and good enough unless you want hollywood style very fancy menus.

    One more thing I want to add ... a single hour of DV AVI is about 13GB in size so you might want to get a second hard drive for capture.
