Hi there...
I followed the vcdhelp pages for both capturing and converting but have a cpl of problems and really need a little help here...
I've done a VHS->DV Cam->Firewire Capture of my Spiderman Venom Saga Tape with Adobe Premiere;
using the DV NTSC Standard 48Khz Preset:
Video Settings:
-Standard NTSC Video (4:3 Interlaced)
-DropFrame Timecode Numbering
-Pixel Aspect Ratio D1/DV/ NTSC (0.9)
-Depth: Millions Quality: 100%
Audio Settings:
-48Khz (16bit) Audio
-Compressor: Uncompressed
which gave me the following (sweet!) results:
-720X480 (0.900)
-00;57;12;14, 29.97 fps
-48000 Hz - 16bit Stereo (192kbps)
-Avg Data Rate 3.61MB per second
from which point i used TMPGEnc to convert the AVI to SVCD-NTSC using the default codecs & settings while following the VCDhelp SVCD convert help page:
-Super Video-CD NTSC (default)
-MPEG-2 480x480 29.97fps (default) CBR 2520kbps
-Layer2 44100 Khz 224kbps (default)
1st problem:
the output quality from the original (12+gig original capture) to a (1.1+gig SVCD MPEG) is pretty good and all but the vcdhelp.com comparison page states that SVCD resolutions are 720x480 720x576 (or lower) but why do i end up with a 480X480 from a 720X480? And is there any way i can get the full or as close to full resolution as possible? (and will it still be playable (fullscreen) in an SVCD Compatible DVD player?) (and I don't mind splitting to two disks) either way..i'd like to keep the end result (burn to cd) as close to the best possible quality/resolution as possible).
2nd problem:
I'd also like to convert the original (12+gig DV-AVI) to DivX (still don't mind splitting to two disks) and compare the two (SVCD to DivX) to decide on which one to keep as a final backup (burn). The problem is is that i want to Divx (encode) the original capture file but VirtualDub won't recognize it. Anyone know of a workaround? (aside from Divx'ing the SVCD which may result in a much worse encoding than encoding the orginal no?)
And I repeate Yes i followed all vcdhelp pages
Ack! Help please!

Well, SVCD is 480*480 (NTSC) or 480*576 (PAL). Any SVCD-Player will show that fullsize on your screen. Horizontal resolution is 2/3 of a DVD. If you want 720*480, you have to encode as X-SVCD.

No real problem there. Virtualdub annot read the DV-stream-avis. Just goto http//www.mainconcept.com and get the DV-codec (demo-version will playback without problems but will add a watermark when encoding to DV) from them. Then virtualdub will recognize the DV-avis.

ahah! thankyou omoses thankyou very much!!
K quick question regarding the 'demo' codec (from mainconcept.com) will that effect any future DV encoding with adobe premiere at all or will it be a distinguishable codec that i can select or de-select by (distinguishable) name? And do you have any idea why are they trying to sell us their codec in the first place? Any other reasons (other than solving my particular problem) that you might know of?
