  1. I would like to make some backup of some home video into smaller size. How do I accomplish this?

    Thanks

You post your question in DVD authoring and that's probably your final goal but you have to first convert your AVI's to a suitable DVD format.
Your sources are interlaced (unless you use a progressive scan camera), probably 30 fps and that makes it a bit more complicated. There are different ways to handle interlaced sources and I advice to read posts at the "conversion" forums about this subject.

You would need to give us more information to start with. What kind of AVI do you have? From a camcorder or a video from a still camera. What format? DV-AVI?

If DV, you might try VirtualDub, the Panasonic DV Codec to open the video, and the Xvid codec to encode. VD has many guides available on it's 'Tool page'.

  5. Thanks for the replies so far. Yes, I will be using the format DV Avi or dvd mpeg 2 so I would like to be able to convert them to Xvid and/or Divx.
