When is the first time you heard or used the word COASTER to refer to useless optical media? My first time was way back in probably 1997. I was reading a GamePro magazine and they said something like this:

Take a Nintendo 64 cartridge and rub it with sandpaper and you have a rough cartridge. Do the same to a playstation disc and you have a $50 drink coaster.
I am actually surprised how well I remember that. Damn, GamePro was a shitty magazine. Probably still is.

Since, I only got a CD burner in the 2000s, my usage of the word must have been confined to crappy music CDs and AOL discs for some time. Nowadays, I really do use failed CD-Rs as coasters. I have them all over, for my thermo tea mug and cold glasses. They are mostly KHypermedia 8x. Only one failed DVD-R and I don't feel like using it as a coaster yet (need time to mourn).

  4. early 1996...in reference to useless CD games and software that came in bundle pack.
Started hearing more often in the late 90s sometime...whenever AOL first started sending out CDs ( I'm guessing 1997 or early '98 )

I remember it from the 80s when we were repairing the ealier cd players. If we found a crappy cd in one we would use it to stick our cuppa's on.

Come to think of it, I remember hearing it first on the radio in the late '80s.
The CD they were playing screwed up in the middle of the song...and the DJ said something like I guess we shouldn't have been using that as a coaster and to play frisby.

was using AOL cds as a drinks coaster back in 97 or 98. think i first applied it to cd-rs when i hit good old vcdhelp.com with my first ever project, burned on a friends machine. (a coaster of course) was that really three years ago? wow, i've bought so much hardware since then! cd burner, dvd burner, ADVC-50, whole new system (from athlon 650 to athlon 2600) analogue capture card, two laserdisc players, widescreen TV, cd player, gamecube, countless spindles of discs....
    the list just goes on.....
