  1. I have this HDTV (1280x720) mpg video file of amazing quality that I would like to keep in a DVD. Does it need conversion to author the DVD? Will it maintain its quality in the DVD format or will it be degraded? Thanks.

    the dvd-video standard supports 720x480, 704x480, 352x480, 352x240, 720x576, 704x576, 352x576 and 352x288.

You will need to re-encode your file for it to be dvd compliant - this will lose a fair bit of resolution. you can of course record the file to a dvd-r as normal data, but currently you can only play it back in a PC.

  3. Thanks for the info.
Regarding what you said about the file being played only in a PC, I guess that if I had an HDTV TV monitor I could hook it to my ATI 9800 AIW card (which I think has HDTV output) and diplays the output from the PC in the monitor keeping the same quality, right?

well newer graphics cards have a DVI output, yes - this can carry your hi-def signal to a suitable equipped monitor. plasma and lcd panels carry these connections too, though not all will be as high reolution as your file.
