I havent noticed this topic posted anywhere and dont know why. Does anyone know of a standalone recorder WITHOUT a built in hard drive with good editing functions (like combine titles, split title, etc.)? So far I've had the Philips DVDR985 which did split titles but stopped working after 7-8 months, the RCA 8000 which had almost no editing functions and malfunctioned all the time, and now I have the Cyberhome recorder which seems to work best out of the 3 but also has hardly any editing functions (and the chapter marks don't seem to be compatible with any other DVD players unless I use the automatic chapter marker (manual chapter marks are not compatible with other players)). So basically, I'm looking for a recorder that will split/combine titles and be able to make chapter marks that will be compatible on other DVD players. Anyone know of any??

  3. As PhilipL pointed out, your best bet is to choose a recorder with HD to satisfy both editing and compatibility requirements. Amazon is currently selling the Sharp DV-HR300 for $399.99 with free shipping, and Sound & Vision has a review for this model:

Considering the price you paid for your non-HD recorders, the Sharp model should be very reasonably priced. Also the re-writable media used on this model is DVD-RW, which can be recorded in either VR (for editing) or Video (for compatibility) format. I also owned the Cyberhome model for a few weeks before returning it, due to its much inferior tuner and picture quality compared to other brands of recorders.

The DVD-RAM format is very easy to re-author in a computer. The PANASONIC brands of stand alone DVD recorders can use DVD-RAM and I think there are a few other brands that do as well.

Your best bet would probably be to record to a DVD-RAM disc ... import it to a computer ... do your editing and re-authoring there ... then burn to a DVD-R with a computer burner.

A single DVD-RAM disc can be used over and over and over again.

Most 8x DVD burners are at or just slightly above $100 now. You can buy a DVD-ROM that reads DVD-RAM for as little as $40

In fact you probably could do this just as well (more or less) with stand alone models that let you record to DVD-RW or DVD+RW

Best tool for the computer to do simple edits and re-author is TMPGEnc DVD Author.

The combo of stand alone recorder and computer re-author is the only way you will probably be happy with what it is you want to do.

(manual chapter marks are not compatible with other players).
smackyourfupa, the manual Chapters I set works find on my Sampo 612N.
My edits with CH1500 has worked with every firmware since Oct. 2003.

I reordered Criterion's "Hiroshima Mon Amour" to it's original (nearly) USA edit. The 65 chapters (including hiddens) work fine.

  8. The original poster never mentioned anything about using the computer for editing and most standalone DVD owners probably have no desire and time for computer editing. As PhilipL mentioned in the following link regarding DVD-RAM vs. DVD-RW, especially post #28:

The myth of DVD-RAM's technical superiority doesn't matter that much when the VR format is concerned. For most people who use DVD recorders mainly for time shift recording, a HD based DVD recorder is the best compromise for both eiting and playback compatibility now that the price has finally come down to become more affordable.

For DVD+VR format used by the Cyberhome model, the manual chapter breaks on DVD+RW discs do work on most players, but not for DVD+R discs unless auto chapter breaks are selected during the original recording.

The original poster "smackyourfupa" was talking about chapter marks made with the SAME recorder I used - Cyberhome CH1500.

    EDITED:
Sampo has trouble if the compatibalized +RW has slight (not deep) scratches on it.

On the CH1500, the more it has light scratches the more error the edits have.

What I did was to play a DVD on my Sampo and used CH1500's pause button during recording.
When done, I used Hide to exclude the overlaps and add chapters, then I copied the compatibalized +RW to a DVD-R.
