  1. Wife's got a PC at work that is exhibiting a weird problem over the past few days. Numeric Keypad does not work. Numlock is on, but no input can be performed. Tried the K/B on another system and it is fine. Tried another known working KB on her system and no input again.

Running Win95 and Citrix Metaframe back to her home office. Numpad does not work inside or outside of the Citrix session.

Ids it a PC hardware problem? Can a keyboard controller chip or port fail to the extent where only NUMPAD functions stop working? Everything else works fine on the KB -- just not the Numpad.

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

  2. I don't think it could be hardware? If the numbers on top of the letters on the keyboard work then the ASCII stuff is correct. I would think the keyboard is either incompatible or maybe the connector on the motherboard is messed up/loose. I'd try to wiggle the cable while pushing the number pad. Does it move the cursor with the "Numlock" off using the arrows on 2,4,6 and 8?? That's definitly strange, never heard of that before. Or maybe it has a virus? I had a virus once that no matter what letters/numbers I pushed it always type the same thing on the screen.

  3. My mate had a problem, where if you don't install the driver, it muddles some keys around to annoy you. Try getting the latest driver.

  5. Thanks guys.

I asked the wife if she re-seated her K/B connector and she said yes.

I asked her if she had powered down the PC and she said yes.

I asked her if she had tried another K/B and the answer was yes.

    Seems that ...

She did re-seat the connector -- while the PC was on.

She did try a new K/B -- switching while the PC was still on.

She did power off the PC and re-start it. The night before she had the problem, but not at anytime prior to re-seating the K/B or swapping to another! Lucky she did not blow a K/B decoder chip or the port.

Everything now works after a power down and power up.

I guess I was not clear enough in my questions!

Lesson: Just cause you're married to someone does not make them any smarter about PC's than the average consumer. The old helpdesk rule applies -- "There's Always Something That They're NOT Telling You!"

Thanks for the input. It seems that in this case there was a short between the keyboard and the floor.

I receved an unusual keyboard error this morning:

i8042prt, the keyboard reset failed, device sent incorrect responses, could not set typematic rate and delay.

It is working fine and this is strange. I haven't restarted the computer yet and I can wait and see.

Your reply must have slipped by me, but I will ask, would you like it if I took YOUR avatar? Or do you think Baldrick would care if I took his? It may not be copyrighted BUT, its just a rude thing to do none the less. Anyone agree/disagree? How do you people reading this think? Is it a cool thing to take someones avatar on a forum or should you get your own? I would like to know how people feel on this.

I would not use someone else's custom made avatar. Maybe using the "idea" to create your own would be OK.

  11. I agree with you b1tchm4gn3t. I think its rude to 'borrow'
some elses avitar or sig. Perhaps cjb1118 did not realise
    and will change if asked.

He did change it...this has been some time ago and I just HAD to respond since a NEEDLESS comment by 808smokey was made. I wasnt directing that comment at 808smokey, so I been wondering why they had to put their 2 cents in.
