I've got errors with TMPGEnc which can't be solved so I need to change programs. I'm very used to TMPG having been using it for a long time, so what's the next best thing when you are forced to used something else?

it all boils down to what you like, not what we like. Use whatever works best for you.

What errors are you getting? It may not be TMPGEnc fault, for so many of us are using it for a long time and are very happy with it, never getting any errors.

"Illegal floating decimal point calculation order." at the end of the first analysing pass during a 2-pass VBR encode when the real encoding begins.

I have tried every suggestion here on this site to get around the problem and am now talking to the Pegasus support people as well. Have tried swapping RAM sticks around and even removing one of them as something else to try. Nothing has worked as yet. I was indeed one of those people you refer to who used to use TMPGEnc all the time with absolutely no errors whatsoever. Unfortunately that was with my old Duron 800MHz CPU computer. Since I "up"graded to a 2GHz Celeron however TMPGEnc won't work properly.

That's the problem though. I like TMPGEnc. I like all the options in TMPGEnc. It just won't work. Maybe I should have asked "what is the closest in terms of quality and options to TMPGEnc?"

    WTF ???

try what ??? That post makes no sense at all...

Many people here believe CCE is the equal on TMPGEnc. I haven't tried it myself so no endorsement from me, just a suggestion.
    If in doubt, Google it.

You bet. If you want to use TMPGEnc in VBR mode then stay well away from an Intel D845GBV mobo.

  13. cce is even better (less pixelation)
mainconcept is good for high bitrates

    thats what i think anyway.

try both and see for yourself.

Thanks, CCE does indeed look like a reasonable alternative to TMPG. I shall give it a whirl and see how it goes.

Mine did exactly that when I tried to overclock my old Soyo SY-71WB mobo. Strangely enough, my new mobo (MSI 845GE Max-L) works fine when my 1.7GHZ CPU is running at 2GHZ...

Yes. The responses I'm getting from Pegasus are leading me very much to the conclusion that you are either lucky or unlucky with TMPGEnc. It will either work correctly with your mobo/CPU or not, and no-one can help or provide a solution if you're one of the unlucky ones with a mobo/CPU it doesn't work with.

One can only hope they will resolve these issues with the soon to be released TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress

  17. I can vouch for Canopus ProCoder Express. It's a steal at $59, imo.

When I encode a super-clean, high-bitrate source down to a VBR2500 with it, I'm often unable to tell that it's been done unless I compare file sizes. My favorite feature is telling it to 'watch' a subdirectory so that whenever I put a file into that directory it automatically enodes it for me. Automation saves me time.

    Great tool!
