I have been making DVD videos (using Nero 5.5) with my Sony dru500a after editing them with Pinnacle Studio8. They run fine on my Pc and kenwood player. I used Philips DVD +R/RW media (2,4x).
Now I have bought the Philips DVD +R/RW media that can be used up to 4X writing. First I updated the Sony firmware to level 2.0H so the writer supports the media.
I can make DVD videos, using Nero 5.5, without problems. They run fine on my pc. But playing them on the Kenwood player gives problems. The player regconises the DVD. But it freezes every few minutes spinning in the player and then continues to play.
So I suspect a compatibility problem with the player. Is there a way to make these 4x speed DVDs to work on the player??

What is your Kenwood model number. You should check compatabilty.

It is model DVF R4050. I can not find it on any list. Up till now +R and +RW with 2,4x speed worked fine on it.

No problems on the computer or player up to now.
I mostly use the Philips disks; but I have used Sony, Mmore too. -

I would try a different media brand ,now that you are having problems. Also, it sounds like u began to have problems after the software update. U might try the old version and see what happens.

The software/firmware update is a must to support the 4x speed mediums on this drive. Making a DVD with the old firmware on a 4x DVD on this drive results in a DVD that plays for a few seconds then skips some time, plays a few seconds and so on.

As a general rule, the faster you burn any disc, the "slightly" lower the quality of the burn.
This is typically not an issue, unless you have a player(reader) that is barely keeping up with your current style. So that going a bit faster, finally taxes it beyond it's limit.
So it could either be that the 4x burn speed is too much for your PLAYER. Try burning the discs at 2.4X (like you used to).
- It could also be that the 4x discs themselves, at whatever speed you use them on, are just not favoured by your player.
Remember ReWritable media is alot less compatible than the write once kind. In practice I really don't expect every player to play them. It's more of a "bonus" if they do.
So try your current new discs at a lower speed. And if that doesn't work, try going back to the original slower discs.
Hope that helps,

I have just tried a 4x +R disk at 2,4x write speed. It still has the same problem.
So it must probably be the player that can not handle the faster disks. Can it be the age of the player, I bought it in 2001? -
I had such a problem with Nashua 2.4x DVD+RW media. When I changed it with Memorex (RICOHJPN01) writen on Plextor 708A at 8x there was not problem. That means the reason is MEDIA - not the burn speed.
So - try with another media! -
Okay, I think I was intially mistaken.
Are you using +R discs, or +RW?
If it's a +R, (not rewritable) than the story is a little different.
Unfortunately there are a number of factors that all contribute to media compatibility.
- the discs themselves: different manufactures disc's have different properties.
-the burner: burners themselves (manufactures) each burn discs in a slightly different way. (Rather minor differences, but enough to sometimes contribute)
- the speed of the burn: discs burned at different speeds will actually have some (again, minor) physical differences. Typically a faster burn can be slightly harder for a player to read, than a slower burn.
- the player: each player has it's own sensitivity. A sometimes good indication of this is how well a player handles dirty/fingerprinted/scratched pressed discs. If your player will read discs in bad shape, it likely will be very good at reading lots of DVDR media. If conversely, a little dust for fingerprints gives your player alot of trouble, it could prove to be very sensitive when it comes to DVDR media.
So all of these factors contribute to how well a disc will be read on a stand alone player. Obviously, change one, and the whole outcome could change.
You are using new media. Even from the same brand, different types of media can be *drastically different*. (This is cause the same brand may actually use several different manufactures for the discs!).
The combination of your player + the new media, might verywell just make a disc that your player doesn't like. If varying the speed doesn't help, then definitely try a different brand. Another 4x +R brand may very well work in the player.
One thing to note: if your playback problems happen like 'the disc be recognized, but have picture stuture and freezing problems during playback' then it's likely a media problem.
RICOHJPNR01 +R 4x discs are good +R discs. You can get them as Maxell 4x DVD+R 5pks (white & purple package), or Memorex 4x +R 5pks (purple cardboard box package).
Give them a shot

The problem is just like you descripe. The player recognises the disk, starts playing it and freezes video and audio for several seconds and then continuing playing. Doing it again some time later. When it freezes I can hear the disk spinning in the player.
The Philips media +R are with the mediacode you mention the Ricoh JPNR01. Can you advise another brand TDK, Sony? Is there a site which mentions the mediacode and name under which they are sold? -
Yes, this site. Look at the left at "DVD Media". As we mentioned: there are many brands of media with RICOHJPN01 media code.
It is good idea to try with Ritek -R, 4x media - very good compatibility (maybe the best) and very good quality.
Finally, you have to change media first and after that post once again the results. -
I bought some other brands but most of them are the Ricoh JPNR01 mediacode which give the problems.
I also tried a Maxell +RW 1-4 speed. Mediacode Philips041. After the speed measurement in Nero it starts writing at 2.4. The resulting dvd is okay. I can play it without problems on my pc and the dvdplayer.
Is there a 1-4 speed +R disk with another mediacode? -
I played the 4x speed DVD's on a Sony player and they play fine there. So it's the Kenwood DVF 4050 player that has problems with 4 speed mediums.
