  1. Using tmpg to convert

says in properties that its just an avi
so converted (encoded) it with combined audio and video as the results. using the wizard
started off as 780mb and ended up as one file of 4.08 gig
the author chooses the same file for the video and the audio but calls one mpeg one and the other mpeg two

right i then author it and tmpgen author makes two files one with a loads of video and audio file is empty.
desided to burn anyway because this is suposed to be combined vid and aud isnt it ...so i burn .......and i get no sound on the finished dvd .....what am i doing wrong.
another question is there any way you can view the results of your authoring without having to burn and waste a dvd
or can you view before authoring to make sure your (combined) encoded version has sound.
so i dont go wasting any more disks ........me thinks im going to have to get some re-writer discs to practice on ......any recomendations ....ones that work on most players etc.
    all the best..mark

    OK, first things first.

I'll start at the finish first - You can test your authored DVD in two ways - 1. Burn to a RW OR 2. Use DVD software such as Power DVD to view the contents before burning.

Starting from the start, it sound like you might have VBR audio in the AVI. The way around this is as follows:

Use VirtualDub. Open AVI. If the file has VBR audio a message box will pop up here. On Audio Menu, change to "Full Processing". Go to File > Save WAV. This will extract the audio from the file to an uncompressed WAV file. Use TMPGEnc and use the relevant template (DVD NTSC OR DVD PAL). Load the AVI as the video file, Load the WAV as the audio. This will create one MPEG-2 file for you. Check this file for the presence of audio. Author this file with TMPGEnc DVD Author and check the output for the presence of audio by either burning to a RW or by opening the files using Power DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. I'm giving nerovision express ago with this one...it's doing it's job right now .it worked with other avi's ok,it has the plug-in... will use tmpgenc just for divx files seems to work ok with them ...non of this fuss and bother.
I like nero vision express... its so easy.....and it has always done a good job...and is easy to use ...far easier then tmpgenc and authors all in one go.
Think if they had a divx encoder plugin on nerovision then there would be no beating it...for someone who wants an easy life ........
THANKS very much for the advice JIM .
will follow it to the letter if Nero does not do the job.
    until then all the best.......mark
